Root Evo Root

Im new to android and my Evo4G is coming later this week. I was wondering what rooting means. I do know this is also a computer term but i was not sure if the word had the same meaning. Can someone explain what rooting is and what it does?

We don't have root access on the EVO by default (root access is the "admin" user for linux os') and so we don't have full read/write permissions (carriers can lock us out of files) when we enable root we are able to access all files on the device.
