Just like on your laptop running win7, each android device has a specific driver for each hardware component, including the screen and graphics output. So if the driver is for a 16bit screen like in the Evo, the operating system will output that bit depth to the screen. Your scenario would happen if you had a custom rom on your Evo with a driver for a screen with 24bit true color. The Evo screen would show the banding because of the hardware limitation, but the screen capture would be smooth when viewed on a proper monitor.

Don't ask me for a source though, I'm just writing what makes sense to myself.

(At least, I think it does--I'm not the most knowledgeable about drivers, let alone drivers in a mobile OS.)
 
Great post OP. And to people saying (s)he's "nitpicking", the same can be said about any feature/characteristic that you may find about any phone. Obviously this is important to the OP and others, if it doesn't matter to you, why even comment?
 
The 65K colors is limited to the EVO screen only. I'm hoping that its displays true 32 bit colors over hdmi, correct? Thinking of using the EVO as my portable movie device while traveling.
 
Oh... good point. If the driver itself is only 64k, I don't see why the HDMI out should be any different.
 
My Moment also has issues when it comes to gradient type of images like these sadly :(

I thought it was due to the low screen resolution on my phone.
 
Anyone own a pre that can post some screens? That screen is amazingly gorgeous. I'm missin me some palm realness.
 
Hey guys, can someone compare the white balance and color reproduction accuracy with a tuned or good TV?
My Nexus One screen is shocking in both aspects, wondering if HTC has increased their standards.
 
I actually sold the EVO on ebay when I realized the colors were not that good. I have a Palm Pre and love how vibrant and crisp the screen is plus it's capable of 16.7 million colors. I did not research the EVO screen first (big mistake). The colors look washed out and aren't as good as they are on the Palm Pre. Web pictures look noticeably different than they do on the Pre. I cannot have a device with such low color depth so waiting for the next best thing with at least an 18bit screen but I prefer 24bit. Good thing I did not use my upgrade :)

Anyone know of any other phones heading to Sprint? The HTC desire has a crisp 24bit screen.
 
The EVO is a great phone but I care too much about screen quality to have it. I use the phone for multimedia a lot and 16bit just does not work. It's so noticeable when viewing web content and videos. Some people just wouldn't notice or know better but I can spot these things with a glance. Who knows maybe they will release a revision with a 24bit screen.
 
yeah i feel the same way. once you know what youre looking for it's a bit tough using an old gen screen. its huge, but not quality.
