Help Evo through the wash...

Lurker
Well, I accidentally put my phone through the washing machine ( dont ask) The strip on the battery is red but you can still see the X's. I took the phone apart down to the component level so that everything is exposed, and put it in a bag of rice. Anything else I should do?? Run alcohol over the components to clear away the soap or something???
When my brothers Iphone went into the pool, he repainted the water indicator, smashed the screen and got a new one. Any chance of doing this? lol :D

Is it possible to add insurance and then take it to them in like a few weeks and get it covered??

I could be wrong, but the rice thing is generally for devices that were only in the water for seconds, if even that long. Going through a full wash cycle probably trashed it!

As for the insurance, I think you have to have it for 30 days before they'll let you use it.

You can try soaking it in alcohol. Keep the battery out, obviously. You'd need to use something like 90-95%. Don't use the normal 75% (or whatever it is exactly) rubbing alcohol. That *might* help, but if there's any impurities in there beyond water, alcohol probably wouldn't help much unless you took it apart (not saying you should).

Other than that, I have no comment on committing insurance fraud...

Which insurance do you have? I thought the "better$ 7" sprint coverage covered water damage

The best thing you can do is just let it sit for a few days. Dont try to turn it on until its fully dry. Thats how people usually fry their phones, when they try to turn them on when they are not fully dry.

This. I've brought back several phones by letting them completly dry before turning them on. This time of year it takes a little longer for them to dry. Try leaving it in a hot car all day or somewhere else warm like a garage.

I've done this several times but even when they come back they're a little quirky sometimes...

I would have definitely recommend that after opening you rinse the unit throughly first with water then alcohol to remove any wash residue. If you've already started the drying process, I don't think I would go back and re wet the phone. Wait at least 72 hours, more if you can stand it before turning the phone on. I've never washed a phone, but I have washed and in some cases dried several bt headsets so I can imagine the feeling seeing the phone in the bottom of a completed wash. I hope it starts right up for you. Good luck!

As for re painting water strips and retroactively getting insurance? That's insurance fraud, talk of which is frowned upon here.

Thanks for all the good looks. Should I take off the LCD and let that dry out in there as well?? Its held together by some adhesive right?...If I take it apart does it just stick right back together or do I need to buy some glue?? I have the motherboard out and drying now.

And I wasnt really serious about the insurance fraud haha. I might be able to get a new to me one for around 150$ if it doesnt work out.

Best to keep alcohol away from the LCD screen, sometimes a high concentration of it can cloud the plastic.

Your local electronics store may sell a Zero Residue Cleaner and that stuff is great.

Here's your Evo teardown - that site will also give helpful advice in their forums on the tips and tricks for teardown and reassembly:

Yea thats the site I used for the teardown. It doesnt particularly say whether it will go back together without new glue though, atleast as far as ive searched.

Did you try their forums? Their service techs tend to answer questions so that if you need to buy something, they'll direct you to what they sell. They seem helpful and non-pushy about it, imo.

I did, I posted a question but no one answered. And I put it all back together just now, she works. The screen has a wash to it, but she works. Theres a red ! where the battery is though, not sure what that means. Any way of fixing the wash on the screen??...clean the ribbons or something??
