EVO V (3D) 4G Activation Troubleshooting Thread

Making this thread so that all tips and tricks for activating the phone can go here. I suspect there will be more traffic on this topic as more phones make it into customer's hands. Hopefully, the Virgin branded phones will not have as many issues.

What we know.
Activation can be a headache with many calls to customer service. Sometimes the phone will fix itself and work after a battery pull. Many times it won't.

What I suspect.
If you let Radio Shack set up your phone, the phone's profile will appear on your Virgin Mobile account. If you don't complete the activation at that time, it seems like the phone can't connect to your account. I think swapping back to a previous phone and then activating may be a work around but I came in from boost and don't have an old VM phone. Also, the website won't allow me to attempt a swap from the EVO. Perhaps someone can test this.

What we can try.
EPST Menu Reset- Dial ##25327# and from the menu, select "reset"
Some have had success with this.

Battery Pull- Take out battery. Wait a while (have heard anywhere from 20 seconds to 20 minutes) Some have had success with this.

Factory Reset-
Turn the power off.
Hold the Volume Down button
Press and hold the Power button until the device turns on
You then get a menu that has Factory Reset in it
Scroll down with the Volume Down button and choose Factory Reset and press the power button. It then takes you back to how your phone was when you first opened the box. Any personal info or apps will be wiped from the phone. (Do not know if this has worked for anyone. I confirmed that this does reset the phone to factory but I don't have a decent enough signal at work to try the activation)

Manual Programming- From the Keypad dialing ##3282# will activate the EPST programming menu. You need a password to open the menu in edit mode. I do not have the password. Perhaps can be obtained from CS or Tech support) The Sprint version of the EVO 3D has instructions for manual activation. Confirmed that this menu exists in the EVO V 4G. Can choose "View" but as stated above, you need the password for "Edit".

Dialing ##786# gets you the Reverse Logistics Support Menu. This also shows "reset" and cancel as options. Web info suggest this is a Hard Reset code. Confirmed that the code works. Unconfirmed results of using it.

Update 1:
Radio Shack activation seems to be a common denominator for those having activation issues. Just don't let them activate your phone. However, I suspect that having any retailer activate the phone is a bad idea. So even if you get your phone from Best Buy or elsewhere, JUST WAIT UNTIL YOU GET HOME before you activate it. DO NOT even let them open your box and MAKE SURE you tell them up front that you will be doing the activation at home. Otherwise, they may start the activation before you realize they are doing it.

Update 2:
When Activating, do not turn on Wifi. May interfere with 3G data connection. Only activate Wifi after the phone has been successfully activated.

Update 3: (Thanks to twelfth over on Howard Forums)

If:

You were unable to do an activation due to an error like: "vDC has stopped unexpectedly. Would you like to tell HTC?"

Stop trying anything else. The phone is fixed in a state due to a bad attempt at activation that it could not complete. If you continue to try to Update Profile in Settings, you will continue to get the same error message. If you try to manually activate via Settings (Activate This Device), it will give you the error message saying to call 611 or the 800 number for customer services.

You will need to do the following:

Go into Settings (Menu, Settings), Power > UNCHECK "Fast Boot"

Power off the device. Pull the battery. Put the battery back in after a few minutes. Before you power the device on, hold down the volume down button and keep both the power button and volume down button held down.

You will boot into HBOOT RECOVERY. There will be a menu with 5 options. "FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, FACTORY RESET, SIMLOCK, IMAGE CRC"... Press the Vol Down button twice to highlight "FACTORY RESET" and tap the power button to select it.

You will be doing a full factory reset on your phone.

When it reboots your phone will attempt to auto activate... and this time it should succeed.

Thanks for the little guide, Antiochus! I can only hope that once my Evo arrives tomorrow, problems will be minimal with the right preparation, but if things do go awry I have this to look back at!

nope I have problems so save this tread.

Edit: you must pass through the hands free activation as it has to update the PRL.

i second this....
and make sure your e-mail address is correct with virgin in case you need the extra info they send out.... i JUST realized i spelled mine wrong a year and a half ago when i first signed up for my OV... or maybe is was the CS rep that spelled it wrong? regardless, it caused headaches back then.

also i had read that you should have your phone off while you swap phones, so i did that but i had already switched wifi on and played with the phone for a while, i think this caused a minor problem... if you are connected to wifi you are not connected to 3G and i think it needs that data connection to do the activation so when i turned my phone on to do the activation it failed until i turned wifi off and let it connect to 3G

NOTE: my evo is activated and i have had ZERO problems with it so far... BIG difference from this and the optimus v... it's surreal actually :fisheye:

This is good advice. Will add to the OP.

The password for the ##3282# EPST editing menu is your MSL, if you're rooted you can get it with the MSL Reader on the market. If not Virgin CS isn't usually too keen on giving it out but if you plead your case you might get lucky. One of the cool things is that it allows you to change your access overload class right from the menu, no having to break out QPST or CDMA Workshop.

Guys im going to buy the HTC Evo V in a couple of days i already switched to the $35 plan. What is going to be the activation process? please help

Coming from my triumph I made sure not to turn the Evo on whatsoever even tho it may be so tempting lol then I got rid of every voicemail on my MT, turned it off went to the VM website did the switch, waited for the email confirmation that the swap was done. Have not had a single problem with this phone and I couldn't be happier to have such a beast phone on a prepaid plan :D oh and mine is one of the sprint branded ones

P.s. HTC needs to chop chop and release the source codes, can't wait to overclock and have everything working (hopefully)

I actually got the (Sprint-branded) phone at Radioshack only yesterday and they did not in fact activate it, both of us saying that I would run into fewer hurdles by doing it online than calling VM directly over the phone. I will say that the employee I got was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about his job.

Anyway, I take the unactivated phone home and toy around with it for a good while, installing apps, getting a good feel for it, personalizing it, making sure there were no hardware problems with it. Didn't seem to get much of a hiccup out of it, but it couldn't perform the hands-free activation by itself.

Once I called into VM the following day and was instructed to factory restore the phone:(, the phone could then make calls, but when flipping between home screens it would either flicker 3/4 of the way through the animation and revert back to the original page, bring me up to a full screen Google search app complete with terms of service agreement on position tracking, or yank the camera icon out of the lower right-hand corner and leave it in a sort of limbo where I can't touch it but am always asked to remove or edit it.

Well, at least my local RadioShack has literally a dozen of these suckers in stock. I can keep exchanging and trying to get this right, but it shouldn't be this much of a hassle. I had an easier time switching from US Cellular to Virgin than going through this.

This is exactly the way you're supposed to do it. Supposedly a lot of the problems people are having is from them turning the phone on and it doing the auto-activation before they actually added it to their account. They need to put a big red sticker right in the middle of the screen that says "don't turn me on until you activate online!!!"

hey so im going to get the Evo and i have
the optimus on the $25 plan right now. so
when i get it do i go on the optimus and
delete my stuff turn it off then go online and
go to my account-->swap phones and do it
from there? and after i get the confirmation i
can turn on my evo right away?

i had to upgrade my account to the 35 dollar evo plan. make sure the account is good. start the activation on line first. then youll program the phone. this came from another member septembersrain. work like a charm. no problems.

im confused on how to change to the $35 plan:/

Sign on to your account at virginmobileusa.com, on the right hand side select "change my plan", on the new screen select the "$35 Beyond Talk Plan" and confirm it. After you've done this, likely taking a couple of hours, you'll get confirmation that your plan has been changed. After getting confirmation, then go ahead and turn your Optimus off and go to the website to swap your phone.

and do i have to have $35 on the account?

Depends on how you are paying, sort of. When you switch plans, it will need the $35. If you don't have a credit card on file that VM can charge, you'll need to be able to provide the $35 payment (through PayPal, debit/credit or pre-paid card) in order to complete the plan change. If you have a credit card on file that VM can charge, it will simply charge your card when you change the plan.

Can someone explain what hands-free activation is?

You don't really need to mess with it. When you first turn on the device it'll automatically do it on it's own to activate the device. However, if you haven't added the device to your account, it'll just get stuck in activation, which you can cancel out. I've used the unactivated Evo for ~3 weeks until I finally activated it this weekend.
So I guess you gave up on the iPhone?

Ha, yeah, I did. There's just no way on satan's green earth that I can afford it.

That aside, so if I get the phone, I go online to my account, swap phones, THEN turn my phone on and let it activate itself?

The process would be:
-buy it
-go home and go online
-log into my vm account
-swap phones
-turn on the Evo and that's it?

Or is it going to be WAAAAY more complicated and more of a headache than that?
I'm not going to be getting it for probably two more weeks but I want to know EVERYTHING before I get it so I don't make mistakes and get frustrated when I get it because I am not technologically inclined WHATSOEVER.

Yes, that process should work perfectly. What I might add is that, once you are home and before you swap phones, make sure your voice mailbox on your old phone is empty (no new or saved messages). Then turn off your old phone (and have the Evo V off).

After the swap is completed, when you turn the Evo V on, it will automatically activate itself.
