Evo V 4G or something else? Help me decide

Hello:

I had it in mind that I wanted the HTC Evo V4G, mostly because of its 4G-ness, but also the large screen is nice.

I'm wondering, though, if it's worth the price. I've been hearing about people having trouble sending text messages with it. I do a fair amount of texting, so I need something reliable.

Assuming money were no object, would youall go with the EV4G? Also up for consideration are the HTC One V and the Samsung Galaxy Reverb.

Thanks for your opinions!

The Evo 4G is GREAT as long as you're comfortable rooting, obtaining s-off, and flashing better radios to the phone.

Without those the phone is frustrating. With those it's perfect.

Eventually VM will probably release an update that improves the radios and does all the work for you, but until then it's up to us to correct the problems on our own.

I think the average user who doesn't want to do that kind of stuff would irritated with the phone as it comes.

This really depends on your wants and needs. Considering I have had my EVO V 4G since the release date the only complaint I can make about it is the infamous "Error 64 Radio Error." Everything else about the phone I love and wouldn't trade it for anything else (4.3'' super lcd display, 1.2Ghz dual core cpu, etc etc). I came from the Motorola Triumph which was plagued with issues, I believe I went through 4 or 5 Motorola Triumphs before I actually got a keeper. The 3D is a somewhat nice feature, I found myself playing with the 3Dness a couple of days after I purchased this device. Now I don't even mess with it after awhile it makes my eyes and head hurt. As far as it's "4Gness" your going to get mixed opinions as Sprint's WiMax 4G network will vary from user to user. On my own experience 4G isn't a necessity most areas WiMax won't penetrate into homes or businesses. The only 4G is on street level meaning being outside is the only way I can pick it up, so I hardly find myself even turning 4G on. If I want a fast connection to the internet I'll use my WiFi instead when I am home. I can't give an opinion on the HTC One V I considered this phone as it was rumored it was coming to Virgin Mobile, but I did more research and heard rumors the EVO 3D was heading to VMUSA as well so I waited it out with my Triumph once I saw the EVO 3D was available to preorder I jumped all over it.

EVO V 4G Likes :D
Fast snappy 1.2Ghz Dual-core chip (Qualcomm MSM8660 Snapdragon) w/ Adreno 220 GPU
Large 4.3'' Display
1GB RAM (Note due to OS available RAM floats around 800MB)
Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich w/ Sense 3.6 UI
Dual 5MP cameras w/ dual LED flash
720p HD video capability in 2D and 3D mode
1.3MP front facing camera for video calls etc
Device feels solid in your hand
Great line of accessories for the device
1730mAh battery <------ I can get 24hrs+ out of the battery depending on how I use my phone on a daily basis

EVO V 4G Dislikes
Annoying Error 64 Radio Issue
Dropped calls or calls not going out due to Error 64
No dedicated HDMI port
2D to 3D mode switch feels cheaply made

I just bought this phone like 3 days ago. In that time I've learned that if you text a lot you literally need to perform the root, unlock, s-off, and rom in order to get the most out of this phone. I always spend a little time on stock to get to know the ins and outs of what works well and what doesnt before I start. This is certainly in my opinion the best phone that Virgin sells (iphone users dont flame me ;)). I've used the Optimus V, the Optimus Elite, I even used the Triumph for like 2 days before splitting that scene real fast. The Evo V is Virgin's flagship and if you're willing to perform what's necessary to fix the radio interference error on texting, then it's more than worth it. PLUS! Amazon and Radio Shack have it for $230 right now, at least Amazon does, that's where I got it. So for that price, plus minus what I was able to sell my old phone for this phone is such a great thing. All other aspects except the radio interference error on the stock rom are just great and work really well.

Edit: By the way that texting error varies on phones it seems, I got it quite often so it drove me nuts, and some people seem to be avoiding it without having to take any action. Still, great phone.

This phone is the best phone for its price, the texting error takes a whole 30 seconds to fix, you just turn off mobile network data, turn it back on n BAM it fixed (for me atleast)

And the problem for me only happens when I'm using data, and it's uploading or downloading and I get a message at the same time

you will need to make sure of a few things first before deciding if this phone is right for you.

1. you have to be in a good sprint coverage area. and preferably a good sprint wimax area or you will never see the 4G

2. you HAVE to be comfortable modding android phones, this requires installing special software and drivers and following directions. its intimidating to the first timer but if youve modded ANY android phone before this you already know everything thats needed. it will be easy.

if you think you fit those requirements and you really like virgin mobiles pricing structure, then yes, I think the EVO V is THE best phone for this network. hands down. iPhone doesnt count. the iPhone is a dinosaur compared to most android phones.

as far as those other two phones, I was considering them as well. but I went with the EVO V mostly beucase

1. its been in production for a year and it has a huge community (as we can see by the custom roms) so it's not like well get the triumph problem where the first few hundred or thousand have problems.

2. it has a generation 3 dual-core Snapdragon. this thing is a BEAST. its a FAST cpu and it WILL be future-proofed for a very long time to come. the smartphone world is quickly going multi-core and the next few versions of Android beyond jellybean have a high likelihood of dropping features for single core, older devices, focusing on software that caters to modern hardware.

in that case, why buy a phone you know your going to have for a year minimum, quite possibly longer, knowing its basically outdated.

3. the One V and Galaxy Reverb both use the same single core snapdragon generation 2 cpu. its still "fast" but its going to get dropped in support soon, just like how the generation before it got dropped from android too.

if you have the money to spend up front for a phone, and you want to save money in the long run vs going with a contract. (virgin mobiles 35$ plan is hard to beat) then for the options available, as long as your willing to do a tiny bit of modding, the EVO V 4G is really hard to beat.

also, in good coverage, the 4G wimax speed is easily triple and quadruple what I get on my dedicated home DSL. im super impressed.

Why list the lack of a dedicated HDMI port as a negative? Mhl is a much better solution reducing parts count and allowing the ability to have HDMI and power to your phone at the same time by a single cable.

Well, I certainly thank you all for your opinions!
I guess I don't really mind rooting the EV (I did that to my Triumph with no problems), but it just seems to me that a $300 phone should work out of the box. Is that unreasonable?
That Amazon price looks appealing, but I think I might try to hold off until Cyber Monday and see if it goes on sale for half price. Bit of a long shot, I know, but I'm cheap that way ;)

This. Not once has the error occurred in the week since I flashed a better radio.

haha must have jinxed myself because just now I had the error, but then my message sent and the error didn't reoccur.

To be fair, I am in the center of my office building and had 0 bars are the moment, so I don't think it was entirely the phone's problem. I occasionally would get an error in here even with my original evo 4g.
