Evo V 4G won't power on = bad battery

Today at work, my Evo V 4G shut down without notice. I was texting with the phone connected to the computer. The phone was at about 100% charged. All of a sudden, the phone shut down. The phone won't power on. I've pulled battery out, and various other reset attempts - all failed. Meanwhile, the "charge" indicator is on. Also, the computer recognizes a device is plugged in and identified as HTC Evo phone.

I proceed to call VM, and they determined it's a defective unit. I had my doubts it's a defective unit.

When I came home, I located a back up battery and put it in, and the phone now powers on.

This led me to wonder how reliable are these HTC batteries? What is the estimate life of these battery? The battery also gave no indication it was dying. The phone was on battery from 5pm yesterday til this morning around 9:30am (55%). I have a Sprint badged phone, so I assume it was a 3D originally and the battery has probably been sitting around for too long, so the battery may have been deteriorating. Still, I can't believe it only lasted about a month.

My wife's did the same thing. Seems like plugging it in got it to turn back on. VM is sending a new battery.

the second evo i bought wouldnt power on this morning.so i pulled the battery and put it back in and it powered right on.i left the phone on when i made a quick trip to the store and when i got back hit power to get it out of standby and nothing.so once again i had to remove the battery since it powered down on its own when i was out.

i took the phone back to radio shack to get a new one. she did check the battery and it had a charge but i wasnt going to take any chances that there was something else causing it so i got a new phone.
