evo vs incredible

I don't have anyway of showing you right now but all of my HTPC streaming content which is recorded at 1080p plays just fine on my phone.

It may have been recorded at 1080p, but it's being converted by your computer to something else to be able to stream and play on your phone.

Broadcom has had a chip that will do 1080p (on mobile phones) for a year now. Pretty sure some other manufacturers as well, but we haven't seen them in a mobile phone yet.

1080p resolution is 1920x1080. No phone's screen has that resolution yet (and really on a screen this small, you don't need it) so nobody is viewing true 1080p on their phone. What you are seeing if you are playing a file like this is something that has been downconverted to the resolution of your phone's screen.

Though it is wonderful wishful thinking to say that the incredible and Evo will be priced the same, or at least competitively you should think about it for a second. The specs of the Evo are better in almost every way, so I think that constitutes at least a $50 price increase when it is brand new. You also have to consider Sprints annoying habit of the dreaded mail-in rebate. With Sprint, you get great value for your dollar when it comes to plans, but I feel like they lack when it comes to value of phones. Their phone/smartphone selection is normally not as strong as other carriers and on top of that, the ones that they do offer are a little more expensive with a 2-year contract than the competitors even after all the discounts, and then you add the mail-in rebate. Not the most appealing to customers, but they have to make money somehow, they are already giving away a lot for a little, service-wise. So just my $.02, the Evo will probably cost considerably more than the Incredible. My guess is about $250 with a $100 mail-in rebate, if not around there, but it would be great if it is less than that, since I want one too haha.

Legacy and Latin, you guys seem to have a pretty good idea on the technical aspects of things, wondering if you have any recommendations for settings to convert movies/tv shows for later viewing on the EVO.

I would be using handbrake and I'm curious what the best settings would be to take advantage of the screen size, but also get away with the smallest pixels to save on the memory? None of my stuff that I would be converting is High Def, just standard.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

bcparker: We chatted about the pricing a bit here:

http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g/68203-another-clue-evo-pricing-game.html

Consensus was it'll probably come in somewhere between $199 and $299.

I think I'm willing to go up to $249 for the EVO, maybe even $299 because I'll save the increase in cost over the incredible in only 2 months of a lesser cost plan on Sprint.

I'm hoping Sprint is wise enough to do this right and maximize the attractiveness of the EVO by pricing at the $199 rate.

Well see that's news to me, what format are you recording at and at what bitrate? I assume you are recording 1080i channels and de-interlacing them to 1080p? I have a mix of 720p and 1080p files in H.264 with either DD or DTS audio and it would be pretty sweet if I could hook my EVO up to an external HDD and then run HDMI up to my TV and use it as a WD TV.

We've already went over that but we are not talking about displaying a 1080p file but being able to decode and play it back. Like I can playback 1080p files on my computer with a 720p screen but it has to downscale them, if anything that takes more processing power because it has to downscale it instead of displaying it at native resolution.
Latin claims his Moment can play 1080p files, his computer is not converting them to a lower resolution before he plays them back on his phone.

I hate it when my 50" TV "stretches" the image compared to my buddy's 30". Its so noticeable and such a pain :(
Are you talking about watching 4:3 (square content) on a 16:9 (widescreen display), there should be a zoom button on your remote that does not stretch it out. If you need more help throw me a PM so we don't clutter this thread.

I'm commenting on him alleging that the 4.3 inch screen on the Evo will "stretch" out the screen as compared to the 3.7 inch Incredible screen. The image on a bigger tv (with the same exact pixel resolution) does not looked stretched compared to a smaller one, so its pretty silly to insinuate it would happen on a phone.

That's not what he was insinuating, though. He merely stated that the screens have the same aspect ratios, so if you think that one is stretched, you must, by simple logic, believe that they other is stretched.

And yes, I understand that he's a troll--but that doesn't make him wrong. It's a simple technical detail, and it's not up for any kind of subjective debate. You can't just quote the one thing that he's written that happens to be fact, yell, "Go back to the Incredible forums!" and expect the fact of the matter to be any different. Both screens have the same aspect ratio. The Evo merely has larger pixels, but the aspect ratio is what's to do with stretching. For the final time, if one is stretched, then the other is stretched.

I put my thoughts on HD content here:

http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g/70466-movies-htc-evo.html#post653917

And SD content here:

Once the device is actually out, we'll have to experiment with different Handbrake settings to get the best picture with the smallest file size, but this post should give you a good starting point.

I hate when movies are stretched out to fit a certain size screen, and prefer having black bars (and the correct aspect ratio). The good thing is that with this small of screen (and the resolution of it), even movies converted from DVD are going to look great.

And some additional information:

Here is a comparison of the relative screen sizes of the Incredible and Evo. Again, same aspect ratio.

aspectratio.png

And the actual specifications:

Evo: 3.6872195805639403" high
2.212331748338364" wide

Incredible: 3.172723825136414" high
1.9036342950818481" wide

The ratio of the height to width for each is determined by the resolution--the same for each phone. This ratio is 5/3 for each of them. No discrepancy.

Is this the ONE time my 7th grade algebra teacher was correct, and I will use that crap again to try to figure out my handbrake settings? :D

I think what's happening is just kind of an optical illusion. I do agree the that Incredible looks to have a taller screen. I think it is due to the extra plastic on the top and bottom giving the phone an elongated look to it while the EVO is not as tall relative to it's width.
But yeah they are the same aspect ratio, so nothing to argue over.

The Evo is way to big. I could never fit it in my pocket, to thick and wide.

Also, WiMax is just an ehanced 3g network. With how spotty it will be in the first year, it will be a huge battery drainer trying to switch between WiMax and 3g.

Verizon and ATT will be going LTE before Sprint - this will be faster.

4g won't be nationwide until 2013 so there really isn't any point on jumping the gun for Sprint when you can have Verizon (only a touch more expensive), but at this point - it's a good marketing tactic by Sprint and if you can put your phone in a backpack and live in a big city it will be kinda cool for a little while.

I love it when fans of consumer electronics go on the "offensive" against competing products. It's entertaining.

First off: the Evo is actually very thin - its the same thickness as the Incredible, and its as wide as the iPhone. Don't confuse having a large screen for having a large phone.

Second off: You can fully control if you want your phone to operate on 4G or not, if worried about battery drainage. And the coverage isn't really that spotty - most of the times you'd either have coverage or not. Its not like 3G, its not that far deployed.

Finally: A little more money for Verizon? If you want to pay the $25 monthly difference for me then sign me up. And even if WiMax is more like 3.5G, it will still be faster than any current mobile offering from Verizon or anybody else.

What are the odds jamor and 5thElement are the same person? Hmm..

Not likely, but they both surely get off on bashing the EVO any chance they get. :)

What I don't get is the level of animosity from these 2 and others. There is no question the Incredible is a ridiculously nice phone, if the EVO wasn't coming, that is what I would have in my hands right now. But the EVO is slightly bigger with a significantly larger screen, and several other things that the Incredible doesn't come with, and that makes it more attractive to ME.

Also, in my case, saving at least $50 per month on a Sprint plan, I'd have to be crazy to not make the change.

SprintFun replied to most of your comments pretty well. I just wanted to add that unless you've tried putting a phone with similar dimensions to the Evo (the HTC HD2) in your pocket, you have no idea. I have, and the phone felt no different in my pocket than the Iphone.

Also, 4G is NOT an enhanced 3G service. 3G is a wireless service, 4G is mobile broadband with more in common with Wifi than cell service.

There is a ton of information about WiMax on this board, I suggest you read it and educate yourself a little bit on it and check out the HD2 before posting any more uneducated comments in the Evo section of the board.

Especially when you have the ability to take a step back and realize that they're practically the same minus a few hardware capabilities (which are a big deal to some).

The talk from both the pro-Evo crowd and pro-Incredible crowd about how one somehow blows the other out of the water is nonsensical.

Simple example I use for size comparison. Have you ever used a Motorola Q phone? We have a bunch of the floating around our office here and it's a very close example of how "big" the Evo will be in your pocket. The Q is similarly sized to the Evo (although not quite exact) and you'll get a very good representation of what the EVO would feel like in your pocket.

It's really not bad at all, and I notice it less in my pocket than I do my "smaller" (yet much thicker) Touch Pro right now.

Another thing I don't get is that I have not seen a single person here bash the Incredible, I personally think it's a great phone in it's own right, it's just, we'd prefer the EVO.

I think most of us here acknowledge that the Incredible is a good phone, it's just not our #1 choice due it being on Verizon and the EVO coming out as well.

I'm glad I'm not a mod, because I'd ban trolls on sight without any warning.

Guys, don't bother arguing with jamor and 5th element -- they're diehard Incredible fanboys and only spend time here when their phones need to recharge (which is quite often).

The Incredible is a good phone. I own one and I'm enjoying it. It has a number of significant downsides, however. I'm looking forward to test driving the EVO and doing an honest comparison. Its good to have choice, and objectivity too.

There's a chance I may own one of each of these phones soon. Company just switched over to Verizon, so I'll be ditching my AT&T Blackberry. I need to see about setting up mobile services on Exchange (in addition to the Blackberry Enterprise Server that's already set up).

The Evo would be my personal phone.
