evo vs incredible

I hate that this is my first post, but I am an active contributer on almost every forum I join... so Hello AndroidForums!

Anywho... I need to step in here and clear up any misinformation that might be out there concerning data roaming. In Boston (and suburbs for that matter), you will not roam on 3G. I owned a Palm Pre since launch and never once did I roam with 3G, always 1x. I forced it to roam on Verizon (via a Patch) for almost 2 weeks and watched this closely. That being said, I can only speak to my area, but you will not roam on Verizon at 3G speeds in Boston, can't speak for the rest of the country.

Looking forward to the EVO! Looking forward to contributing!

I am also evaluating the Incredible waiting for the Evo. You've made several comments about the Incredible and I have experienced the same things: Well built phone, incredibly high battery drain, a little buggy, with a screen that feels a-little-too-narrow.

Also, I want to point out that 5th and jamor spend a significant amount of time in the incredible forums generally making the forums undesirable to read. I'm disappointed to see their posts on these threads as thus far I've been happy to see the EVO threads constructive and friendly in nature.

It is disappointing how much a few vocal tactless evangelists can ruin a useful and beneficial forum.

For a screen this size 480p is MORE than enough. The reason the EVO has 720p recording capabilities is because it has an HDMI output and can be played on any HDTV. The Incredible does not and therefore has no need for 720p recording.

Anything over 37" is when you begin to notice the difference between 720p and 1080p (if you have 20/20 vision). So the difference between 480p and 720p can be noticed on anything over 32".

That really isn't true because you are forgetting to factor in viewing distance. The bigger the screen and the closer you sit the more you will notice an increase in resolution. Computer screens have been 1080p for years and we are talking screens less than 24in, heck a lot of 17in laptops have 1080p now but you sit incredibly close to a laptop.

Usually the rough rule of thumb for 1080p is if you are sitting 1.5x times the diagonal from the screen you will be able to notice all the detail, 2x times for 720p and 3x for 480p.

So the phone would have to be closer than a foot for you to be able to enjoy the extra resolution, which is not exactly impossible but I doubt many people want to hold their phones that close to their face to watch a full movie.

Make sure to mouse over and read the alt text. 1920x1080 is still kind of higher end on most computer LCDs as they like to sell lower res screens for cheap. Still, most of them are at least 720p (1280x720) with plenty between that and 1080p (1440x900, 1680x1050, etc.)
 
ThinkPad T61p owner here. Reporting in from a 1920x1200 15.4" screen. I'll take all of the resolution I can get, thankyouverymuch.

Totally :D I just know that is not the norm for consumer laptops or even desktop LCDs. The bigger desktop LCDs are getting to 1920x1080 but the cheap ones lots of people buy or get bundled with a retail machine tend to be lower. My old Trinitron CRTs were something ridiculous at max resolution but I kept them at 1600x1200 for the most part.
 
Oh yeah, I definitely agree with you--most consumer screens are not of the highest resolution. On that note, I'd like some extra resolution from the Evo, even... but 480x800 is good enough for me. Especially coming from 320x480. :(

Sprint - Don't know, but after asking people here in this forum for coverage and service opinions in my geographic area, it has all been positive and I'm looking forward to saving money and getting a better phone when I move to Sprint from Verizon.

If it turns out they suck, my 30 day guarantee will save me and I'll go back to Verizon with the Incredible. Win/win either way.

Very good strategy mate. I guess that can't get more objective than that. I'll be adapting the same strategy too. I'm not a fan boy of any phone or network. I just want both hardware and service to be the best for me. Cheers!!!
 
I'm leaving the incredible and going to the EVO when it comes out. sorry but VZW is not all it was once cracked up to be... and the price makes a huge difference month to month...
 
Regarding all the comments about Sprint coverage being just as good Verizon's because it in effect uses the same network (roaming on to VZ's)...

How come I've seen big differences in "bars" (5 vs. 1) when comparing friends' reception at the same location?

Is it that if you have 1 bar from Sprint, you wont roam onto Verizon there, even if Verizon has a much stronger signal in that area?

I for one am happy that they are starting to make phones that are not meant for Japanese grade schoolers anymore. I don't want a brick, but my God my adult size fingers and eyes would like a big phone! Especially since I am getting drug into the web on a mobile kicking and screaming.

I have been with Verizon for over 10 years. I never wanted to go with Sprint because of the coverage in my area, but I just got on the waiting list for an EVO. I will save $40 monthly on the same plan, (+10 for text, +30 for Data and +10 for GPS) that is a chunk of change. But, I do have the 30 days to put it to the test.

Is there anyway of finding out when 4G will be in my area?
 
the incredible has an internal 8 gigs mem while evo only has 1 gig. You cant factor 4g for everyone as its just not available everywhere. I love the screen size of evo but i cant say it makes that big of a difference like the mem does. Now where the evo is great is hdmi thats awesome but not everyone has that like usb so could also be setback. I cant talk bad about sprint they have awesome service. so does verizon so it boils down to price and what carrier you already have. Also Do not ultimately make your decision based upon a certain device because having a device without coverage sucks!

If I remember correctly the internal memory for the Incredible is no different than an internal SD card. Many apps don't even use the memory. The 1G you are referring to on the EVO is a 'different' type memory than the 8GB you are referring to on the incredible. Apples-to-Oranges...
