Help Excessive Android OS Data Usage

Device - HTC ONE S - O2 UK

Since 27th April (when my plan resets itself) until today, Android OS has consumed 105mb of data! Just over 20% of my allowance!

This baffles me as I have disabled all social networking apps, restricted dropbox and play store updates to Wifi only, turned auto sync off too but it still chews up my data!

It seems to have gone awry on the 11th May as from then until now it has used up just under 85mb and since the upgrade on 14th May (via wifi), the spike has increased somewhat further!

Today alone it has used nearly 8mb!

Can anyone recommend something as this is totally unacceptable.

Interesting. On my Nexus, for a week, it's only used 5.9mb. Fortunately, I have unlimited data, so it doesn't matter. Does the One S have the ability to restrict data usage by app? Not even sure if you can restrict Android OS though.
Welcome to the forums Shaggymoose, btw.

Well, turning off all those other apps, shouldn't affect Android OS (at least I believe so since they all have their own calculated usage). I'm still baffled. Does Sense have its own listing? I wonder if it's bundled in with Android OS and it could be causing the data hogging.

Yikes!
This seems to relate to the question I just posted. I wonder could it be those randomly opening applications the Android is so famous for?

I've just had a look at mine and 12 - 17th May Android OS has used 2.13MB. Other things that should be turned off have been using Kb too

I turned my phone off and on again earlier and so far, touch wood, it appears to be behaving itself, will update in the next couple of days but I doubt that this has resolved it.

Mine has used 1.6mb this month. I don't really know what it's doing to use that. If it were as much as you are reporting I would be more worried. Hopefully we can figure something out to help you?

That'd be much appreciated, small amounts of data I understand but to chew up over a fifth of my allowance in under a month is plain crazy.

Some other things to thing about:

Advert supported apps tend to use the internet a lot
Are you closing apps or are you jumping to the home screen and they are still running in the background - checking location, news updates, etc.
How often have you set the phone to sync your Google account, the weather, stocks, etc.

I've used 14mb in 10 days which isn't brilliant but I can live with it.

Mine was using alot, so i turned off the mobile network in the settings menu. This turns off the mobile data network totally, so no nasty surprises. I leave wifi on all the time

But if it was the internet, then the internet usage statistics would be greater rather than just the Android OS.

I've disabled all social network app's on this phone as I use none of them, i've disabled the stocks section and have turned auto sync off to no effect.

This phone literally lists everything in the usage section.

Think that I may have stumbled onto something.

I checked on google play for anything that I downloaded on 11th May, turns out (whilst connected to wifi that evening) I downloaded a game called contract killer, I remembered that after downloading that game, it said that the app needed 240mb + onto the SD card, I cancelled the download and uninstalled the game and thought no more of it.

I wonder if the download 'got stuck' somehow and is carrying on downloading the files so i'm going to download the game again tonight and also the 240mb of data (via wifi of course) to see if this stops it.

Is worth a punt if nothing else.

any luck?
im having the same trouble, everything is turned off app wise, and usage meter shows android OS as downloading 108mb in a couple of hours, no idea whats going on.

cheers, me too, its fixed now , i have just lost everything on phone though, thought i had all the stuff on old phone still,

i wonder what went wrong in the first place?

Just uncheck "use wireless networks" under "Location services" in settings. I thing that you guys have mobile which comes with factory checked "use wireless networks". In my case, I had checked it myself thinking that it would help in some way, but unfortunately it ended me costing lot of data usage.

Let me tell you another benefit from it, it will increase the battery life also as continuous data transfer consumes more battery. You can check the battery performance after doing the above changes.
