Help Exchange not working

Well, looks like I'm hosed.

Our OWA server is behind a firewall, can access on laptop from work, can only access on laptop outside work via using security key (USB-based).

So no access for the Droid...sad, very sad.

Droid does email (Exchange)... Droid does contacts (Exchange)... Droid dont do Corporate Calendar.. I get the authentication failed wheen I try to refresh. Anyone have any ideas for this? And we are using Office 2002 so the google calendar sync option isnt even viable.
keep trying and read my garbled post. it works just gets screwed up during setup sometimes.

I have tried and tried and everytime I hit refresh on the Corporate Calendar it says Authentication Failed. I dont get why it fails when email and contacts work!!!

The other missing Exchange bit is GAL access. No Global Address List support at all.

This basically makes the phone unusable for anyone in a company larger than 10-20 people, as you don't try to keep the entire company in your Contacts...

Just got my Motorola Droid from verizon ($30 Email and Web plan) I am able to get exchange emails (webmail server). But I am unable to open attachments in exchange emails. But I am able to open those if forward them to gmail and try to open it there. Any idea where could be the problem or how to fix this? Thanks.

Well, I had the calendar working for a while, but after changing settings that's not working either. All I get is authentication failed....

When I try touchdown, it can sync everything but e-mail. it will send e-mail no problem, but can't receive...

Getting very frustrated...

I manage an Exchange Server and I had the same problems as everyone else on this thread - ActiveSync worked perfectly with previous phones and doesn't work with Droid. One of the previous posters has the correct solution relating to device security.

Exchange has a global option (all users are effected) for Device Security. This feature pushes password enforcement and device wipe settings down to the phone. The security setting features in Exchange are not compatible with Droid. Once you clear all Device Security Settings on the Exchange server (then wait a few minute for changes to take effect), ActiveSync will begin working. All of the settings are on a separate dialog box under Mobile Services/Properties/Device Security in Exchange System Manager (2003).

If your organization won't change these security server settings, than you will need a 3rd party workaround. I would have to believe that a fix should be available from either Motorola or Microsoft in the future. Either an oversight on the part of Motorola or a "Windows device only" code rewrite is needed from Microsoft.

By the way, Microsoft Outlook Web Access words great with Droid, so just have your administrator make this service available to you and you can get up and running in the short term.

In regards to the $29.99 vs $44.99 plans and ActiveSync, even Verizon doesn't know the correct answer. I had Customer Service and Technical Support staff at Verizon stumped over the issue. After testing my account with both contracts I can tell you with 100% certainty that both plans are technically identical. It's more of a licensing issue with Verizon and they try to scare everyone into spending more money with the more expensive plan. If your cell phone services are registered and paid by a corporation, Verizon may require the higher-cost "corporate" plan. You'll have check on that yourselves.

CMG I have been on the phone with VZW as well as MOTO for the better part of the day with NO luck setting up my exchange email. I don't think it is a phone issue but rather a server setting here at work. I need some help. Our IT guy is on vacation this week and I can't get in touch with him. I have admin and can get in the server but I don't see exactly where you are going to change the security settings. Can you help me?

Yep. I believe it's less "oversight" and more "additional feature" though. What happens on a windows device when Exchange enforces PIN rules is the main winmo UI lock then requires a numeric/alphanumeric password. Android UI lock uses the pattern drawing mechanism. So Android will need a refresh to allow alpha PIN entry for its main UI lock. It should have been in 2.0 but prob didn't make the cut in time.

Just use Touchdown until Mon. You're going to hose your other users.

Removing Exchange 2003 security settings:

Log on to your Exchange server
Start
All Programs
Microsoft Exchange
System Manager
Global Settings
Right click on Mobile Services
Properties
You will now be on the "Mobile Services Properties" page
Click on "Device Security"
Clear all check boxes
Hit OK, OK and exit System Manager
Wait 15 minutes and the changes will take effect

Working for me but.... had it set up and in a matter of minutes my email and contacts came over. I did not want the contacts - did not check the box - but 1200 names came down anyway. I do have several issues. On my PC at work I have a folder that says 2008 correspondence and some sub folders in that. On Droid I see 2003, 04, 05 etc (long since deleted folders) and all of the sub folders are now showing as prime so I have a very very long list of folders. I see no way to hide or delete or move any of them. Very annoying. Any suggetions?

Best regards..... Steve

Got all the way down to "Mobile Services Properties" page and there were only a General Tab and a Details tab. No Device security tab or option. Under the General tab there were Exchange Active Synce and Outlook Mobile Access. ALL the boxes were checked for: enable user initiated sync. enable up to date notification. enable notifications to special SMTP addresses. under the mobile access part both boxes were checked for: enable outlook mobile access and enable unsupported devices.

now what?

I'm in the Device Security window. We have device security set up. I clicked on the exceptions button and there are a bunch of users in the list. If I added myself to the exception list, would this work? I can't remove device security for everyone.

Adding yourself to the exception list did NOT work in my case. still trying to figure this out. I can SEE my folders, I'm just not getting any damn mail into it.

If I go to my https://exchangeserver/MobileAdmin/ page, i can see droid attached to my email account so it is trying to work...

My company servers do require a pin. I've seen this in TouchDown and my old windows mobile phone. TouchDown seems to be working and I may decide to buy it, but i have one problem with it. It looks to keep all the data in its own DB and does not sync with the native Android Apps. This means that my contacts are not available via the dialer and caller ID won't work. Are there thirdparty apps other than TD that will integrate with the native apps?

Now onto the native exchange syncing. Even though my work servers require pins (possibly remote wipe, though not likely) it looks like I am able to connect. The corproate calendar is populated and is updating, but the mail and contacts are not. No error message that I can see either. Where can I check for that? No popup re a pin etc.

Please let me know if any of you can figure out how to get mail and contacts working with the native exchange syncing even though the droid does not support pins. I've tried it with the lock pattern on and off. What I didn't try was to make sure the passcode pattern had at least 6 dots since the pin policy requires 6. Wouldn't that be something if that worked?

Thanks,
John

This is my major complaint with TD also. I'm wondering though whether it's actually a requirement to be certified by Microsoft to be Exchange compliant to keep the data in a separate DB. This could be the case since otherwise TD would be writing the data into the main DB which is not possible to PIN protect, which was the whole point of the PIN policy enforcement. I'm really just guessing but this makes sense to me... anyone know?

I didn't get as far as you did - the connection to my company's exchange server fails so none of the apps are getting sync data. It's an interesting point about the 6 dots though... I'll have to give that a try. My company policy is 6 numbers and I had only 5 dots. My feeling was that dots in their entirety weren't going to be compatible though b/c it would probably be impossible for an IT admin to change your PIN remotely to some new number, push it to the phone, and tell you over their helpdesk line what that new number was so you could get in (as opposed to full remote wipe). Worth a shot though! Post if you get it working?

John, I am having the same exact issue with my Droid where the calendar is syncing but no email or contacts. I'm fairly certain it has to do with the Activesync policies not being compatible, but my Exchange admins are looking at it to see if there is any way to get around it (possibly via exception). I will repost here if I figure it out.

Thanks,

Brian

btw, there are a bunch of people over at Droid forums having the same issues: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-general-discussions/642-exchange-2007-calendar-sync.html#post7316

and, here is the google code entry: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4475

For everyone having issues, please click the link in the post above to go to the dev forum. When you are there, star the issue in the upper left corner which will 'vote' the priority up.

New VZW Android for me, work Exchange requires remote wipe and pin to be setup. Will not work in Android 2.0 native apps. Calendar shows up and syncs but no e-mail. I downloaded Touchdown and that works fine for e-mail but contacts and calendar do not sync on that.

A slight disappointment, but I expected a few bumps.

Set up exchange on mine took about minute and all is well. Received Email, Contacts and Calendar. :D

Not sure what would be different on mine.

probably your server is not enforcing the security profile that requires a pin. the native android service does not support the pin setup. Touchdown does and it is working. My windows mobile phone did and it worked fine too.

I find it odd that the calendar seems to work fine without the pin, but contacts and e-mail do not. I'm sure that this is due to the stock android sync service not prompting us or supporting pins. I changed my visual passcode to use at east 6 dots, but it did not help.

I'm using touchdown now until this is figured out by google, moto, and verizon. I really want the contacts and mail to use the native apps so it is integrated better. I want my contacts in the call log and caller ID etc.

I did some searching last night and came across another third party tool called Roadsync that looks to sync to the native apps, or at least the contact portion does. I just installed it and will give it a try.

Sync With Microsoft Exchange Server & Corporate Outlook Email Via Remote Email Access via ActiveSync on Your Smartphone.

Do any of you know about this app? Are there others besides TouchDown and Roadsync worth looking into? I saw two others, but did not try these yet either:

Nexeo
Exchange ActiveSync on your G1! nexeo.net

and Dmailer
Android app syncs with Exchange - News - Linux for Devices

I'm willing to spend $10 - $20 to get seamless integration until they fix this. Keep me posted guys. I'll let you know how roadsyc goes. They offer a 5 day trial.

Edit:

Just did some more reading on dmailer and it looks promissing, though it doesn;t mention security settings.

http://www.dmailermobile.com/mobile_site.swf

According to the site above the data should show up in the native apps. That woudl be really cool, but my guess is that this app is for android 1.5 and not 2.0.

Thanks,
John

Just tried roadsync and am pretty happy with it so far. It synced my contacts to the native android contacts app which what I really wanted for call log and caller id purposes. Pretty psyched!

The email and calendar came through great too, but they use proprietary apps from road sync, not the corporate calendar or email app, but that is actually OK. The contacts one is the one I was most interested in using the native app for.

Oddly enough I never got prompted for a pin nor did I enter one in the roadsync settings. It just works somehow.

This looks to be worth the $10 until they fix the native support.

My exchange server account is working fine?!
I went from Paying 45 bucks (with my storm and BES Server) to just putting in my username/password and excahnge server.

When I get email it gets to my phone faster than it does my Outlook (2003 full version)

I Love it!!
