Root exec 'system/bin/sh' failed

Hello,

I'm very new at this rooting stuff and I saw a lot of benefits from it so I thought I'd give it a try.
I've followed this guide and completed it:

14/Jun r6 riskfreeroot - HTC Desire rooting guide - now with HBOOT 0.80 and OS to 1.21 support - Android @ MoDaCo

I also did the custom recovery image part (although I don't know what it is used for)

And I didn't make a goldcar either because someone told me I didn't have to do that as I don't have a carrier.

But my problem is I can't change anything as cmd keeps giving this error when I enter adb shell:
- exec ' system bin sh' failed no such file or directory (2)

I'm in my phone recovery and my usb cable is plugged in. This is the screenshot:

Any help is very welcomed as I've been searching the net for quite a while.

Edit: I think I've found my problem. I've installed the app: rom manager and I can get into the custom recovery from there.
It seems I was uncapable of going in the custom recovery myself (probably because I'm doing something wrong). But I'd still like to know what I did wrong.

Edit: ah well, problem is solved I guess, no need to post in here anymore.

i have d same problem. my phone seems to stuck at booting animation and can't enter android. Do u have any solution?

First, I use cyanogen froyo rom. And i cant go to recovery mode. When in recovery mode, my phone only shows black background with red triangle and no option (wipe data, etc...). Then I reboot to hboot and choose clear storage. And ever since, I cant go to my android and if i choose recovery mode, nothing happpen... HELP!!!

Ok that triangle means that you have htc recovery. This means you most likely rooted using the old methods (before unrevoked) which flashes the HTC engineering recovery.

If you use rom manager, it doesn't flash clockworkmod, it just puts update.zip on the sd card so you can reboot into recovery (it applies update.zip from sd card) and boots into clockworkmod.

clear storage wipes the sd card, so now you dont have update.zip.
Rastaman kindly uploaded the update.zip to dropbox so it can be downloaded. See below

I assume your device is GSM since you used old methods? The fix would be different for CDMA so please confirm this before going ahead.

You need to:

1) download a non a2sd rom (if you are GSM with a sim card [NOT CDMA] use this one: Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!

2) download the update.zip http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5684959/stuff/update.zip

3) Using a card reader, put both zips on your SD card

4) From off, hold vol down and press power. Use VOl to navigate to recovery and power to select the option to get back to the triangle

5) At the triangle press vol up and power. Now you should be in clockworkmod

6) Do a complete data wipe / factory reset (you will LOSE EVERYTHING) and flash the rom. Go through the initial setup of the rom and turn on usb debugging

7) once you have flashed the rom, go to AlphaRev 1.8 and download the ISO this will give you s-off (Again this is ONLY GSM)

8) Burn the iso to CD using cd burning software. Put the cd in the drive, reboot the laptop and boot to the cd. Follow on screen instructions (DO NOT disconnect the phone from USB until told it is safe to do so. DO NOT interrupt the process in any way)

9) Download the android flasher utility [UTILITY]Android Flasher(Rec,splash,Radio,HBOOT,bootanim)(NEW METHOD)(11/05/11) - xda-developers

10) Download clockworkrecovery 2.5.0.7 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20471345/SUroot/Tools/Android/Recovery/recovery_CWM_2.5.0.7.img

11) Use the flasher to flash the recovery.

Once you have done this, any accidental wipes of the SD card will not prevent you from loading recovery. Please do not use rom manager again.

---> what do u mean by go thru d initial setup of d rom? I've finished wiping. n now there's option to reboot, apply update.zip. should i apply d update? thank's....
 
After you flashed the rom, reboot the phone. When you boot into android you set it up with gmail address, langauge settings etc. Go through the wizard.

btw, if i want to upgrade to gingerbread, how do I flash the ROM? is it from recovery mode?
 
Yep, all roms from recovery mode. So now you are s-off and have proper clockwork recovery? Steps 7 - 11 complete?
 
Because it seems easy to do, it lures you into a false sense of security, then things go wrong.

You now have proper recovery so just use that.

We see so many rom manager caused issues, where people get stuck and we help.
