Root Experienced rooter, but need help

rsarno

Thank Me, Im Irish!
My boss rooted his phone, asked me to just flash a new rom and setup some apps for him (tmobile samsung vibrant)

I confirmed it was rooted when i saw Superuser app.

I installed/opened Rom Manager, flashed Clockwork Recovery, and copied a ROM to the SD Card

No matter what i try, i cannot get Clockwork to give me the option to "Install from SD Card"

I have tried holding both buttons and power button, it brings me into recovery but with limited options:
-Reboot System Now
-Reinstall Packages
-Wipe Cache
-Wipe user data

From within Rom Manager i clicked "Reboot into Recovery, and it brings me to those same options.

From within Rom Manager i clicked "Install ROM from SD Card" and again, same limited menu

What am i missing?

I had the same issue with my Vibrant at first. I bought it off of craigslist and the guy told me it was already rooted. Tried rebooting into clockwork and would run into the same problem. I ended up just copying the update.zip over again (basically rooting again), reinstalling packages twice and then it worked. Hope this helps.

Just flashed a new update.zip, looked like a success

when it rebooted i went back into recovery (still with those limited options) and reinstalled packages. Ive done it 2 times now.

Waiting for phone to boot again but it doesnt look hopeful.

EDIT, 3rd time reinstalling packages and trying for more options in recovery, no luck

I had issues with that part of rom manager to install from sd card. I just flash from clockwork mod recovery itself as a result of it. When I flash a different rom I don't bother renaming it to update.zip, I just use the part of clockwork mod recovery that says install from sd card or something to that effect and just search for it where ever it is there.

thats right, the issue i have is that i dont have a "Choose file from SD Card" or anything else.

In clockwork it only gives me those options

-Reboot System Now
-Reinstall Packages
-Wipe Cache
-Wipe user data

Forgot to ask but what version of clockwork mod recovery is on there? When I flashed a certain rom it updated to the 2nd to the latest version, dont remember it off the top of my head but the last number is 3. I've tried to update to the latest version using rom manager but it can never download it and always gives an error.

EDIT: its version 2.5.1.3

Son of a bish ....

I just tried to just backup current rom, from within RM

it reboots phone into this limited ass recovery, and never backs up.

Wtf is going on lol

You could do the nobrick method in this thread that I put some info for. Its somewhat of a long process and it should in theory put the stock recovery back on so then when you flash another rom (preferably eugenes froyo) you can go into rom manager and reflash clockwork mod recovery. Its my dropbox link and it has all the tools needed with a few non odin ready roms.

edit: btw the dropbox link files are around 1GB and not 750 MB I say in that thread I linke above

Are you suspecting it is not rooted? I opened SuperUser and i see that Rom Manager has been granted root privileges

does that confirm it?

Well I mentioned what I said so you could reflash clockwork mod recovery and hope it will have the option you need to install a custom (non odin ready) rom. The nobrick file in my dropbox link puts on a completely different recovery and then after that the video tells you to flash the stock rom but I did eugenes froyo at the time because my issue at the time was the internal memory needed to be repartitioned. So if you can still get the phone to boot up you might want to back up the stuff on the internal memory just to be safe.

Sounds like when you flashed clockworkmod recovery you chose the wrong option for your device. Boot up the phone and link up to your PC. Go to the clockworkmod folder on your internal SD and delete it completely. Reboot. Then go in to Rom Manager and flash clockworkmod again, this time make 100% sure you click Vibrant, and not any of the other options.

BAM got it ... got into clockwork recovery.

but oh shit lol ... i was soooo happy to see clockwork, i ran right into "install from zip" and selected the rom

then had the "oh shit" moment, i forgot to backup :o

cross fingers!!!! lol

No problem dude. I would also suggest bookmarking the thread I linked to just in case. I have refered a few people there from these forums and XDA for various issues with the vibrant that didn't concern what the thread was originally for and it fixed their issues.
