Root Explain please!!

I have an older droid, the one with both keyboards....anyways, I have 2.1-update 1 on my phone...can I root it? If so, how? And what is a ROM? All this is new to me, I just know I want a better, faster phone....someone with patients for newbs please help me!!

Ohh my god! My Droid only has one keyboard. Where can I get one with two!?!?!? That is like twice a cool.
