Help External mic? NO?

Hi. Simple and quick question here.

I have an external mic. A simple average 3.5mm connection.

When I plug it into my Samsung Galaxy s4, it is recognized as headphones. It says "Headphones connected". And headphone icon appears.

Is there a way to connect a microphone to my phone? Maybe any app to help my phone recognize my mic as microphone?

Could it be something to do with the type of connector you have on the headphones compared to the S4? See ... 3.5 mm jacks: 4 vs 3 conductors ... pretty picture at the bottom. Also see here ... Yes, I have tried recording sound. It still records with the phone's microphone.

With all these links I'm sure you can figure a way to do this either with your current mic or some other with the right connector/app.
