Face Unlock Unsecure?

Eh, i personally never expected biometrics level of security. It seemed like more of a neat trick/ convenience type of thing. I'll still probably use it, if for no reason other than to show off that my phone can do that :P

Luckily most people who might "acquire" my phone would not have a photo of me available to unlock it. I do not consider it a fatal flaw.

I have every intention of putting a pattern unlock underneath the face unlock, so if they can't face unlock they're stuck on my pattern.

Not to mention that the phone will be locked down tight as fast as I can get to Lookout's website to lock the phone. It would be useless to them.

I thought of this security hole years ago when I started seeing face unlock in laptops. Its not so much supposed to be a good security system, more just to keep your friends off your phone while your grabbing beer from the fridge :-)

I'll use it if its fast enough, but then again in low light it may not work so good. So who knows.

Still definitely going to use it. It is an awesome feature and is pretty convenient. I will also utilize the pattern unlock too, though.

lame marketing ploy really, not of any real value and this and the failed demo at the release media event show that.

Its listed as "Low Security" for a reason. No, its not that secure, but I imagine it wont be easy for someone to guess your name to get your picture, and with gps anti-theft apps, it wont be hard to find your stolen phone.

It's convenience really -- pattern unlock will leave smudges on your screen, the same with PIN -- slide is not a lock at all.

It's just a tiny added security feature to help slow a dumb criminal. Anyone in computer security or any security, knows that the idea isn't usually perfect security, but rather to put up enough barriers as to slow down the bad guys, hopefully enough so they give up.

So think of it in those terms -- a criminal likely doesn't have a photo of you, so it helps a little.

The blooper fail demo aside, it looked nice and fast and something you could do easily with one hand.

And the more things you can do with one hand....

wait that didn't sound right... :D

Don't be a smartass.
No thanks. I'm going to continue making my points via sarcasm as I damn well please, thank you very much.

But its the truth. Face unlocking wasn't meant to be the end-all-be-all of phone security. Its more of an alternative to slide to unlock then to a PIN or Pattern Unlock.

I think it would be a bigger deal if it wasn't fooled by a picture given the inexpensive camera and time it takes to tell if its you or not. It doesn't sit there for a minute trying to tell if this is an image or real life, it looks for what... 10 seconds? Looks for a face, then says is this face similar to one i have on file? Yes? Unlock. No? Don't unlock.

it's listed as "Low security, experimental" for a reason.

Slide to unlock, I do believe, was meant to keep from random button pressing while the phone is in your pocket. Pattern and code to unlock is an actual security feature, not perfect, but it's an actual security feature. I use smart app protector to further protect individual apps that I'd prefer people to not use. By the time they figure anything out, I would have tracked them down and/or wiped the phone with lookout. I'm gonna use the face unlock just for the sheer convenience of it, not as a real means of security. Anyone who uses it as such is an idiot IMO.
