Facebook app insists on syncing contacts

This is a bit of an odd one. I am enjoying my brand new Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014, but there is a niggling issue every time I turn the thing on.

I have always kept my Facebook contacts separate from my main contacts on my Galaxy S3, just because I don't want my main contact list to be cluttered with details of scores of FB acquaintances. That's just me, but it works and I'm happy. I have the "sync contacts" option disabled in the app and all is fine on my phone.

On my Note it's a different story. I have disabled contact syncing as per normal, and no, my FB contacts haven't synced over. However every time I switch the device on I get a notification asking me whether I want to sync my FB contacts. No, I don't!!!

I realise this is really a question for FB, but I'm not confident that I'd get much of an answer from them, so I thought I'd throw the question out on this forum which I know is full of helpful peeps. :D

Any ideas?

It may help to completely reset the FB app. There's a few steps to do this;

1: Log out of FB
2: Go into the APPS list in your Settings and locate the FB app and tap on it. Clear Cache and Clear data.
3: Using a file manager, go into your phones internal storage, or the SD Card if you have one. Tap on the Android folder, then tap on the data folder.
4: Delete the folder named com.facebook.katana
5: Turn off the device and turn it back on.

Now if things went right, you should be able to log back into FB and it should only ask you that question once.

Thanks for this. Unfortunately it didn't work entirely. :( I checked first that I could find the com.facebook.katana folder before I started, and sure enough it was there. I then followed your suggestion. When I came to deleting the folder I discovered that it was no longer there, so I presume that deleting the cache and data also deleted the folder. I restarted the device, logged into Facebook again, got the notification, deselected contact syncing, and restarted the device again.

I am now getting a different notification. Facebook now wants me to log in to sync Facebook with other programs (whatever that is supposed to mean). So I decided to tap on the notification and see what happens. I now get a "Set up Facebook account" screen inviting me to log in to use my Facebook account with "Samsung Galaxy"....whatever that is! If I log in it asks me to remember a web browser, and this then takes me to a screen saying that "Samsung Galaxy" is going to have access to my information and gives "Samsung Galaxy" authority to post on Facebook. The screen displays 2 profile pictures - my own and one with the "Samsung Galaxy" logo.

What is this "Samsung Galaxy", and can I safely accept this? If I cancel, I keep on getting the same notification every time I start the device, so I assume if I accept it I will no longer get the notification. I just want to be certain what this is all about, and why the device/Facebook continues to insist on me accepting this setting.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I wish I knew. That's the weirdest thing I've seen yet with FB.

Are you adding the FB account from your phones Settings > Accounts > Add Account ? (If not and it's already there, remove it and try re-adding it from there.)

That's how I add mine and I've never had any issues like the ones you're having. Do you think it could be some type of conflict with TouchWiz?

Samsung Galaxy is your phone. Is the Facebook app built in or did you download it separately? It seems that your issue is likely from a built in Facebook app.

In this case Samsung Galaxy is my tablet! Facebook does not come preloaded on the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition. However as soon as I logged into my Google account it pulled down all of the apps that I have installed on my Galaxy SIII phone.

Are you saying then that it is safe to accept this setting? This doesn't explain though why the device shows 2 Facebook profile pictures, one of which is for Samsung Galaxy.

I came here trying to find out why Samsung Galaxy wants to access my Facebook account. I see that most people think it's a matter of the Facebook app trying to sync with the galaxy, but I think its the other way around! It never happened with my old galaxy tablet, but with the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro, I keep declining, and it keeps asking. The question I can find no answer to is, what does samsung galaxy want to do with my Facebook account?does anyone know?

Having just set up a Galaxy Tab for my wife, I can tell that Samsung allows you to sign into their ecosystem with your facebook account.

This is a trend many companies are doing that is wanting access to your facebook account to set up a way to use their ecosystem. There should be a better way for samsung to allow you to not use fb creditials. One for me I don't want any other company having access to my Facebook account and number two what if you don't actually have one? Account linking in my opinion is just another way for big brother to keep tabs on you and also to keep you flooded with their advertisement on you FB account and other accounts you link your Facebook account to.

Samsungs don't usually have FB stuff included AFAIK, and should be no reason for then to want to connect to FB. However if it was supplied and customized by a carrier, it may have FB bloat in it. Was your Galaxy Note Pro supplied by a carrier, and if so which one? Sometimes FB pays $$$ to carriers, to have their stuff included on customized and subsidized phones.
