Help Facebook messenger battery drain!

Both my wife and I experienced terrible battery drain today on our nexus fives and the culprit for both was the Facebook messenger app! I uninstaller the app and while it was gone the battery was fine but reinstalling caused the drain again.

I'll uninstall it again, obviously but I'm curious if anyone else has encountered this issue? I see the app was updated on the 4th of Feb but I always update my apps as soon as I get the notification and the drain only happened today so not sure if maybe it took a while to push the update or something?

Hi. It so happens my wife and I also have the LG Nexus 5 (with latest Android OS 5.0.1 and latest App versions) and have the same issue. I stopped my Messenger, but it keeps restarting (which is expected). It also started today (or late last evening).
I left a comment on the Play Store, but I don't know how soon Facebook can fix this. In the mean time I'll monitor this on my phone (and my wife's) and see when Facebook updates the app.

^^ That... Facebook and its messenger have been battery and CPU/RAM hogs on every device I've owned. Its not just your phone. FYI, FB apps are granted permission to suck information from every database on your phone. I recommend losing the two apps ;)

I also just started having this problem either last night or this mornin, but I'm on 4.4.4 on an Xperia Z3. I haven't been able to find any way to stop it other than uninstalling the app as well.

This problem also started for me yesterday on an Xperia Z1 Compact. I have had the messenger app installed since I've owned the phone and I'm assuming an update has caused it. Battery consumption is now almost exactly double what it was before.

I have had exactly the same problems over the last day or two on my Nexus 5. No real problems with battery drain before then.

I've had the same problem for the last 48 hours. I've had to uninstall Facebook Messenger. I can't see any other obvious threads about the same problem, so not sure how widespread it is.

Same issue I have been facing since yesterday on both my mobiles LG Nexus 5 on Android 5.0.1 and Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo on Android 4.2.2. Un-installing the app fixed the issue but that means I can't get my Facebook messages anymore.

Just for fun, I'm going to jump in and say that since yesterday, Facebook Messenger app has been destroying the battery on my Nexus 6 :(

Registered here just to say that since yesterday the same thing is happening to me. I'm on samsung galaxy s3.

I just registered to complain about this as well. a few days ago I suddenly could barely get 6 hours of battery life on my galaxy s5. it's not even 90 days old yet. I called verizon and they said it was showing them that facebook messenger was using 33% of my battery. I was curious how they knew that, but I suspect that it is actually using even more then that. I was charging up the phone completely before going to bed at night around 9 or 10, and the phone would be dead by 2 or 230am. Verizon had me do a factory reset, which sucks, but isn't a huge deal so I will report how that works out, but I won't be reinstalling this app.

Please post updates here that will correct the battery drain problem that has been reported to you.

For me, this problem began 2 days ago when I upgraded to LP 5.0.1 on my LG-G3.

UPDATE: My battery usage now indicates the top 3 draining apps are:
Screen 28%
Sense V2 Flip Clock 24%
Messenger 21%

Certainly, "Sense" and "Messenger" were never draining hogs before LP upgrade.

Same issue here. 2014 Moto X. Had messenger on the previous phone as well as this one without issue until yesterday. 30+% battery drain from messenger and I haven't used it once today. :-( Hope this gets fixed soon!

Has the fb app itself been updated? I've been having a lot of issues with it freezing and crashing! Nexus 5 5.0.1 had same messenger issue I'll reinstall to see if it works!
