Yes, unless there is something unique to the Backflip. A Factory Data Reset will restore your phone to the out of the box condition.

Your contacts and apps will get re-downloaded from Google but not your text messages

I can only speak to the droid, but no it should not lose root. I had to do factory reset once before I started using custom ROMs and I kept root. Hope this helps.
