Help Factory Reset Freezes

I have a stock Incredible that my son gave me. It had a crack in the screen but worked fine anyway. I was instructed to send the phone to PCD, the authorized repair facility for HTC. I had the screen replaced and just received it back today. I went online and activated the phone and the test call was fine. My problems started when I went to do a Factory Reset. It starts fine, two messages show up then the phone powers down and then back up. Then if freezes, showing a black screen, a picture of a phone, and a red error triangle. The only way to get out of the screen is with a battery pull. I spent two hours on the phone with VZW and then HTC. The HTC tech finally told me that the rom was somehow damaged, probably at the repair place, and to take it into VZW to have a tech reflash the rom. The problem is that VZW doesn't have techs in the store to do that anymore.

Is there any way that I can do this myself? Any help would be appreciated.

someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here though, but I believe the screen you are seeing (recovery screen) is part of the factory reset process, if you let it sit there for about 10 minutes it should complete.... Been a while since I've done a factory reset so I could easily be wrong...

That's a little sad. I'd be apt to try the latest RUU per the previous link if you continue to strikeout on the factory reset. I'm not sure about the waiting thing either.

You could also try resetting from the bootloader although it should be doing the same thing you're already trying from within the phone settings. If you want to try it anyway, power down the phone or pull the battery and replace, then press and hold volume down, then press the power button. Wait a few seconds, it'll search for a file and not find it, that's normal. Now use the volume keys to select "clear storage", press the power key then volume up to accept. You may end up in the same boat but it could be worth a shot for grins.

Thank you for your responses. Unfortunately, the screen I keep getting stuck on is not part of the process. I even tried one last time and left it for over 15 minutes. I had to pull the battery to restart the phone. I also noticed that when it restarts after the freeze, I have a triangle showing above the bars and I have to do *228 programming again to get it to go back to normal.

I usually use a Mac and have no problem connecting my Eris by usb cord, but the Inc is not showing up all the time. I switched over to WinXP and installed the HTC Sync program that was in the article above, but it messed up my computer and made a bluetooth network and completely removed the wireless connection from the Windows side of the Mac. I later remembered this happening last year when I got my Eris and I did a system reset to fix it, but this time it wouldn't work. So now I have an Inc that won't do a factory reset or connect to my Mac and a Windows partition that won't connect to the internet. This just keeps getting worse!

Update - The VZW tech I spoke with yesterday on the phone called me back today to see if HTC was able to help me. She said that the phone's warranty had been voided when it was dropped, even though I had the screen repaired, but she was allowed to make an exception because of our long history with them. She is sending me a refurb today that will have a 90 day warranty, so I am happy with that. Now all I have to do is restore my computer!
