Help Factory Reset on HTC Desire

Hi all,

Please bear with me, as I'm not the most android (or technical for that matter :o) 'literate' person.

I've had my HTC Desire for over 2 years now and I need to free up memory (I think) in order to make my gmail account work. I've been advised to clear cache's which I have already, but I still receive a low memory warning. I was then told to perform a factory reset. Now, I'm not bothered about losing apps as I can re-install these, but I am worried I will lose pics and contacts...is this the case?

Any help is greatly appreciated. :)

hello :) i don't own the phone but as long as yu extract the sdcard before(just to be safe) preforming a factory reset. either way it shouldn't just remove the sdcard or back them up to ur cpu :D

Many thanks but all my contacts & pics are saved to the phone. The HTC Desire doesn't give me the option to save any of this info to the SD Card. It is 'greyed out' and I can't select it

Hi,

You don't have to loose everything. You can just do a back up of your personal data like picture's, Video's, & contact's before you do a factory reset just download this useful app here http://bit.ly/H5B8tT and install the app and choose a path where you want your backup to be saved (I would highly recommend on a micro SD if you have one) Because you are going to be formatting your phone.

Hope this helps :)

Thank you Matt

Are these files / contacts easy to retrieve after the reset? Again, I apologise if this is basic stuff, but I really don't have a scooby! :o

No problem :) And Yeah after you have done the factory reset on your device just Re-install the 'my backup' app and just restore your backup you did prior to the reset.

Just connect to computer through USB. Turn on mass storage then move ur pics and files. If you don't wanna loose your contacts just sync it to your email account using sync on your phone settings if that available. If not download the app and then sync it through the email app.

Yeah this would be the way to do it. Especially if you don't have a spare Micro-SD lying round. Either way is good. :)

You can back up your contacts to sd - it's the "export" option in the menu of the contacts app. Of course if you store them as Google contacts they will be backed-up to your GMail account anyway, but why not do both?

As for pictures, are you sure? Camera photos surely go straight to sd.

One thing though: are you sure a factory reset is needed? Try looking at your apps sorted by size (by data size if you can) in the Manage Applications menu and see whether any are using excessive amounts of memory (10s of MB). If so just tidying them up may be enough without wiping everything.

I assume you have moved apps to sd where possible? But don't move ones with widgets that you use, as the widget will stop working.
