It's pretty easy now, but have your friend help you out with this if he has more experience rooting and applying ROMs on the Eris than you do.
In fact, I would make it a condition of the sale: "I'll buy it off of you only if you successfully complete this procedure right in front of me."
The activation (and also de-activation) of the phone works a whole lot better if you are using a stock phone. (If you took it in to a VZW store to activate it, and it has a custom ROM on it, probably they won't help you).
