Factory Reset

Ever since upgrading to 2.2 my captivate has been plagued by short periods of being unresponsive. For instance on my 30 minute commute to work, the music player will stop playing about 2x for about 2 seconds and then start playing again. During these periods, the device responds to no physical input. Very annoying.

I am considering doing a factory reset to see if this clears the issue but have a couple of questions.

Do I need to unroot before I perform a factory reset? I have not installed a custom ROM, I'm just rooted.

Will all my apps be automatically restored from the Android Market once I re-enter my credentials? Or is it better to back up my apps using a back up program and restore them from the back up?

I'm considering the same thing. I'm 95% sure the market will reload the aps, but wouldn't mind comfirmation. And I have the same question on the root.

I've got everything backed up to my SD card, but I'm afraid that restoreing that would just restore whatever it is that's messed up on the phone.
 
a factory reset will not wipe out a root, which is fine. all the apps you bought will remain in the market, they are linked with your gmail. you will lose all your pictures and stuff, and data like phone numbers, so it is best to back them up. or you could use titanium backup and get most of your stuff back once you do a factory reset, but dont leave the files on your internal memory or it will wipe them out also
 
If the "factory data reset" under "privacy settings" enough to do it, or should we go through the whole power off - key press thing?

Also, I run both Titainum and My Backup, but I'm a little concerned that recovering will just recover whatever is goofing up my phone. Is it better to just do it manually?

that should be enough, there is a code you can type in your dialer that does a more complete wipe but i dont remember it off hand

edit: and the one through the dialer is supposedly more thorough but i dont know
 
I just did a reset from privacy settings, and while it remembered my purchased aps, it didn't remember my free ones.
