Root Failed to get root - but S-OFF???

Ok, so I traded in my old evo for a new one cause I was having 3g issues. After running the new phone for a week with no trouble, i decided to root it like my first one.

Did everything the same this time around, but having some trouble.

When running unrevoked 3, it gets pas the first piece, it restarts my phone, then it said failed to get root.

So I checked my hboot. Its S-Off now.

When I go into recovery, it gives me a black/grey phone with a red exclamation mark. Obviously recovery didn't flash right.

So where do I go from here? Guessing I am rooted, but without recovery? Does that sound correct??

My guess, and I'm hoping for some expertise from you all, is to flash either clockwork or amon again, then do a backup?

Help...?

You're absolutely right, it sounds like you have a broken recovery image. Go here: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/259446-clockwork-amon-ra-pc36img-files.html to get CW or RA.

Ok, got Amon installed, the newest one.
Doing a backup now. I just leaft the default options and added wimax. Is that a good backup just for the stock rom? I had clockwork last time, so just making sure I got everything I needed.

Edit: forgot to mention, looks like my phone is rooted, but my Rom is not, no root apps work. Is that an issue if I only intend to flash the stock rom back only if I'm unrooting in the future? I'm planning on flashing a new rom anyway...

the first time i rooted i had the EXACT same problem as you and i was freaking out and all you have to do is rerun unrevoked.

Is it a problem to just not have a rooted stock rom if I'm not going to use it for anything except recovery though? I already have a custom recovery flashed now, and I can flash roms, so is it really needed to restore and reroot at this point?

Tried installing superuser, and it installed, but it wont update (says there is an update and to flash it instead) and root apps still dont work on the stock rom....

Just flash a custom ROM, if you like stock, flash a rooted stock ROM.
