Root FAO LeeDroid Users

Particularly the users who had problems with AdFree after flashing 2.3d or a.n.other LeeDroid ROM.

After uninstalling and reinstalling AdFree, do you have something called "hosts" which is crossed out on your backup/restore list?

I've done a bit of restoring and investigating, and it seems this "hosts" appears when you uninstall and reinstall AdFree.

However, I am yet to find a way of deleting it from this list. According to the legend, it means "hosts" isn't installed on my phone. However, I can't remove this from the list. It doesn't disappear after a refresh of the apps list, or reboot of the phone.

If anybody knows how to get rid of it, or if you also have it, please let me know!

Never uninstalled and re-installed sorry. Got mine to work just by updating from the market and ticking on the symlink option. Just downloaded an updated file today. I do though have a hosts file with the line through it in Titanium. Its there with a load of other apps that also have lines through them that are not on my phone any more. All claim to have no backup and all have buttons that are greyed out for freeze/backup/uninstall. Deleted the rest by deleting all apps not currently installed and then refreshing. Hosts stayed there. Is this really a LeeDroid issue or more of a Titanium one?

Thanks for the reply, mate.

Interesting that you didn't have to uninstall or reinstall, yet you still have "hosts" with the line through it.

I was curious as to whether it was LeeDroid issue, AdFree issue or Titanium issue - although I suspected it was the latter two.

I'm glad I'm not alone in having this hang around on my phone. I'm just curious as to why it hangs around, despite the fact it's got no data or any other purpose.

I'm guessing "Hosts" is a directory built by the app to list blocked, banned or allowed sites that the user sets.

Thanks for the feedback.

You may well be right. I'm just shocked that it won't let me do anything with it, despite the fact it doesn't seem to actually be on the phone or in use.

If you symlink to data/data it creates s txt file in com.bigtincan.adfree whatever

That's only if symlink (s-on). Otherwise it uses system/etc/hosts which is part of the Rom

Not sure if this is relevant but latest titanium has lines through 2 apps (not installed) but also no backups. So shouldn't be there.

May be titanium bug

I have symlink on and I am S-On rather than S-Off.

I do have a hosts file in system/etc though. I'm not sure if this is the hosts file which is showing up as uninstalled though.

Yep got one of those in my /data/data directory

I don't. :D

A Titanium bug is a definite possibility. It's certainly a strange one.

If you dont, maybe you need to go through the download of the hosts file via adfree

I had to download it a couple of times to find it. The app says symlink to data/data/hosts. But after some looking, it was /data/data/com.bigtincan.android.adfree/hosts.txt

If this folder isnt there, that may be your problem.

JB, the hosts file in your system directory is the one that comes flashed with the rom. The data one should be there with symlink. Like yourself I'm still s-on and have both but can only update the data one.

It's strange that I don't have this file, and even if I did, it seems it wouldn't make this phantom file disappear as Gren still has it below.

What would I need to download a couple of times in order for it to be found? I've downloaded and installed the latest update etc, but it still hasn't appeared where it should do.

It seems I've got the former, but not the latter.

The strange thing is that despite all of this, AdFree seems to be working fine. I'm not getting any adverts!

If your ROM comes with AdFree, why would you install it again?

The flashable .zip works great for me. The app AdFree doesn't work at all.

I hope this helps someone.

I have a rooted Evo 4G. A few weeks ago I installed AdFree, didn't like it and uninstalled it after I used an option in it to restore the original hosts file.

After that I noticed in Titanium Backup PRO the word "hosts" which was crossed out on my backup/restore list. No matter what I tried I could not get rid of it. I decided to ignore it. About a week later I figured that maybe I could restore the hosts file from the rooted Evo 4G my son has. I used Root Explorer to search for "hosts" but it did not find anything.

I decided to try something. First I made sure that "hosts" was still crossed out on my backup/restore list in Titanium. It was. Next I used Root Explorer to search for "hosts" on my phone. It found two files. I noted where the files were located and then moved them to my computer. I went back into the backup/restore section of Titanium and the word "hosts" with the line through it was gone. In fact there was no mention of "hosts" there.

I rebooted the phone and again checked it and I have checked every few days since then. The "hosts" problem has not returned. I've had no problems with any programs that have ads on them so I guess things are alright.

Nice one, mate.

I'm going to give this a try now. I'll report back shortly.
