Root [FAQ]ROOT MEMORY: a2sd+ / partitions (updated 10th August 2011)

Thanks Dan,
followed the instructions, and got my phone rooted; flased with Leedroid ROM and can confirm have A2SD+ working well.
Feels great to be liberated!!!!!
Cheers all:D

And..the cycle begins.. :)
It's a good start..A2SD+, better than Froyo.
But soon you'll seek more, will run out of space (Murphy's Law).. ;)

I'm sure you're right, Droidzone, but for now I have about 250 megs and I'm hoping Data2sd or Data2ext get stable before it's necessary to take the next step.

Data2SD is stable, but installation is not very easy. Data2Ext is definitely not stable. Your approach is right. I wasnt suggesting you try them at the moment. But there was a time when A2SD+ used to be enough for me. :)

I have Desire with latest 6.1.1 Cyanogen. I did the steps as described, only I have RA recovery instead of Clockworkmod which doesn't work well. But the steps are the same, I did choose 0MB Swap and 512MB ext but when I (re)flash the Cyanogen mod what I get is this:
h40o2yj

I dont think this pic is visible so here's the link: Yfrog Photo : yfrog.com/h40o2yj - Shared by WeekendProducer

Now I did all the steps again, a reflashed Cyanogen ROM, but what I got is again the same as shown. My A2SD storage is always 33,60 MB total? Why is that?
SD card is 8GB, and the size after making 512MB partition is correct, why the OS is showing 33,60 only?
I just can't get free space in my Internal storage which is only 151MB total?!

Is there a way to fix all that mess? Thank you in advance.

Remove partition and format in gparted. Then repartition in gparted

This may have been answered already and tried to read everything in the thread but may have missed it:

So, when I do a Full Factory Wipe or Wipe Davlik Cache, does this leave my apps installed on the ext alone? Wiping doesn't affect the sdcard at all does it?

So, when I flash a new rom or kernel after a full wipe, are my apps still sitting there with their respective Davlik Cache's intact? So if I do a full re-install from Titanium I will have two copies of my apps? Is this gonna cause a problem?

Confusing.

Factory reset will wipe /data.. All your apps and Dalvik cache are on EXT which is an extension of /data so everything will be wiped.

You can always format sd-ext via recovery anyway.

Is the only reason for moving all the apps to the phone before you do the partition is cos the SD card will be wiped?

So if you have a backup of the card with Titanium it doesn't matter as the apps can all be reinstalled anyway?

The partition is an extension of internal memory. Do apps need to be on internal memory to take advantage of it.

I'm not sure if you take a titanium and restore on new Rom, they may all go to internal. If some are still on sd, you can move them back

So I guess if they won't all fit I'll have to back them up with Titanium, delete a few, do the partition, flash the ROM & then put them back on with the backup?

Well now it became really interesting to watch what is happening with my storage. I didn't do anything as I'm waiting for the weekend to have more time to 'play'. But When I checked the info about memory status the A2SD now shows 99,69 (33,60 before) total MB, and 53,49 Free. Internal total is 151 as it was with about 20MB free (After I moved all SD capable apps to SD manually - with native Froyo option :( bwah). System is 250 total with 126MB free... and so on.

Now how come that A2SD storage goes from 33,60MB total to 99,69MB ttl without me doing anything (not even rebooting the phone in between the readings?)
Is the quick system info app reliable enough for these kind of info?

I'm coming from the old (first) Samsung Galaxy which had 8GB internal storage and some 1GB or more for apps and I never come even close to fill the all the space available and now in few days of having Desire I'm stuck in the way I can't even install all the apps I had on the old Galaxy and that were not NFS or navigation or whatever are the big fancy space-eating apps... :(

Sorry, getting confused by the comma's

Can you give me it in whole numbers please?

Are you saying total size of partition was 33MB and now is 99MB? How much of that 99MB is free?

A screenshot would really help clear up the issue.

Sorry because of comma's, here are the screenshots: LINK

One additional thing I did is that I manually moved all the apps 2 SD (Froyo option) but that didin't affect the free internal storage space much.

P.S. If you are having trouble seeing the gallery please inform me. Thank you.

bah, the link takes me to my own picasa profile.

Thats really odd. Not sure what to say. Would be worth double checking in GPARTED if the partitions are correct. I can't even think of a reason for that.

I know I'm being thick here but just to clarify after I've done the backups & I'm ready to do the partition for apps2sd+ before flashing the ROM, all apps have to be moved to the internal memory?

I can't really get my head around why if both the sd card & the phone get wiped as part of the procedure & everything is backed up?

Because at the time is writing I wasn't sure of the effects for one. Also if no wipe required, all is in place.

Just do whatever and ill post you some fairy dust. This will make all Ok
