Help Fastboot and RUU flash problems

evansgr

Lurker
Hi guys,

I am completely new to this and my situation is exceptionally grave, since this is not my phone we are talking about.

I tried to root my friend's desire following the guides provided here, but now I am stuch on the hboot screen.

I remember receiving an error message saying that PB99IMG.zip not found, so I figured out that I should place this file in the root of the SD.

I did that and it flashed a rom (I guess), but it failed at the "Radio-V2." Now it says that the partition update failed and the phone is on halt.

My guess is that I am kinda screwed. As far as I know, I cannot do anything with the device.

I would GREATLY appreciate it if some one could help. I am an absolute noob and I could use some 101% noob-friendly help.

My question is whether I can return the phone to a working condition.

Thanks in advance.

Hi evansgr, and welcome to AF,

For what it's worth, that "error" message about a missing zip will appear any time you enter hboot for any reason - it's absolutely normal.

Right now your options are limited. Best bet will be to try to run another RUU. So can you tell us a bit about the phone: GSM or CDMA (does the phone have a SIM card or not? What network was it on?), what it says about the device at the top of the HBOOT screen, how you tried to root and what RUU you used?

Also, was the phone having any sort of problems before doing this? Crashes when run heavily in particular - if anything like that, you want to get the phone good and cool before trying an RUU (take the battery out for a good while, but don't get it damp while cooling it).

In any case, the better way of running the RUU would be from a PC (using an RUU .exe) with the phone in fastboot mode, if you can still access that.

If you can answer the questions above we can try to identify an RUU for you. But no promises, a radio partition update failure can leave the phone irrecoverable.

Hi Hadron and thank you for your reply.

I did my research and I got accustomed to some of the things you asked me. So, yeah, I can guarantee that I have access to fastboot through Windows (though some commands give me a failure - like the getvar one).

I tried to root using Revolutionary, but I cannot tell you more than that. Right now on the hboot screen I see the following:

BRAVO PVT4 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT - 6.93.1002
MICROP - 051d
TOUCH PANEL - SYNT0101
RADIO - 5.17.05.23
Aug 10 2010, 17:52:18

The phone did not have any issues prior to this - at least as far as I know. My friend is not a heavy user and the only reason why he wanted to have it rooted and CFWed was because of the memory sortage.

I tried to run an RUU.exe, but I got a low battery notification. I am charging it right now, dunno if there is a way of reassuring that it is fully charged.

Again, thank you for your time, it is really appreciated.

Edit:

I forgot to tell you about the carrier. He bought it from Greece without a contract, so it was not locked.

OK, so it's a recent hardware revision GSM, unbranded. And the S-Off part of revolutionary has worked (can tell from the hboot version number). So you have the ability to fastboot flash individual partitions if you can still get it into fastboot mode.

Good plan to not run the RUU if battery is low. I think the LED will probably still change colour when charged, but if not just leave it a few hours with a mains charger and it should be done.

I guess that the PB99IMG you tried to run was the Android 2.3 update (from the radio version)? My suggestion would be to charge the phone, leave it to cool for a few minutes (a PVT-4 device shouldn't have the overheating problem, but why take chances), then connect to a PC, put it in fastboot mode and run the RUU. If you can't get into fastboot mode then just run it anyway (can happen with a partition update fail, but generally that leaves you in a state where you can still run the RUU).

If that doesn't work then you could try running a different RUU, such as RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe from shipped-ROMs.com. Because of the Revolutionary hboot I think you should be able to do this even after attempting the 2.3 upgrade.

If that doesn't work, we'll have to see whether we can update the radio partition separately using fastboot. But we're getting a little desperate by then if 2 RUUs both fail.

If you can get the radio part of the RUU to run successfully then you're home. Even if boot, recovery and system are messed-up it's fixable (e.g. fastboot flash a custom recovery and install a custom ROM), the two critical partitions are hboot (which is fine, because you have the Revolutionary version installed and an RUU won't change that) and radio. So if the radio partition updates correctly, even if it still won't boot don't try another RUU, just let us know the situation.

Good luck!

Good God, thanks a lot for that.

I tried to re-install the RUU I have on the SD card of the phone, but nothing happened. I will try the RUU you provided me with in your post and I will inform you about the outcome. :)

Yep, it is fixed :D ! I owe you 10 pints man, thanks a lot!

Unfortunately I do not have the time to keep on searching for rooting and installing CFWs, since I am giving it back tomorrow. My friend told me to put the latest version on it and he's off.

Next time I'll get around this phone, I will make sure to triple-check everything.

Things were so much easier on my old Galaxy S.

Thanks again, I almost had a heart-attack :P .
