FastCharge (dangerous?)

I just added the FastCharge option to my kernel for the Victory. I've read a lot of conflicting information about it. Some claim it can damage the USB port used on the PC (or maybe the phone), others say it can only cause issues with pre USB2.0 ports.

I added FastCharge to the kernel last night (finally debugged it at 3:15am), and then I enabled it via the terminal command (confirmed enabled with Kernel Tuner) and let it charge while I slept (a few hours). It was fully charged, and not hot when I woke up, and the PC it was plugged into seems fine. I have a couple of other users testing it, and have not gotten any bad feedback.

Anyone have any experience with FastCharge? Is it actually dangerous, or is CM just trying to maintain support for older PCs by leaving it out (even though they don't maintain support for older phones)?

What I have read on the subject was that it is a multi-dependant system. First is the 500mA charge rate. Then we have 1000mA charge rate if the device and the USB port support it. Then we have 1500mA rating, again, if the device and port support it. Basicaly, if your system can support it (useally the back ports), and the cable isn't damaged, you can charge at 100mA. Sometimes 1500mA.


Check your motherboard's documentation.

I would think as long as the USB driver in the kernel supports it, it should be fine. I know with some kernel's the USB drive has not been updated. So as long as the kernel does it I am sure it would be fine. What if you use the wall charger does it also do the same, or is it the PC that is allowed to push more juice?
 
The code checks to see if the charger is identified as USB and then calls for the extra amps, I've got it set to 900ua for now. From what I've read, some car chargers identify as USB, and this can also help then. I need to do some testing on each type of charger, atm my mtp is still working when fastcharge is enabled, so I'm not certain the code is even working properly.
