Help Faster Phone without Rooting

Is there anyway to make the HTC Eris faster without rooting it. I don't have many apps that are running all the time so just wondering.

Only two ways that I know of, root or a different phone. The Eris is an underpowered device and HTC loaded it down. The custom roms developed by the devs for the Eris get rid of a bunch of HTC crap and streamline the processes making the phone operate faster and smoother (in most cases). That and being able to overclock definitely help the Eris out. My wife was completely against rooting until she got to playing with my phone one day. She handed me her phone and told me to make it like mine, so I did with CCM7. Haven't heard her complain about once.

After using my son's hand me down Motorola Droid 1, (which I dropped and broke the screen and now it's recognizing the touch screen) Im all for it just a little uncomfortable about doing it.

There is really nothing to it. I personally used the 1-click root app and then installed CCM7 on my wife's phone. My phone, I did the hard way a long time ago and I've had several ROM's on it. If you read on here and are still stumped as to how to do something, just ask and there will be somebody here to help you out.

There are a few things that you can do:

- trim the call logs to near-nothing. There is an app called Call Log Trimmer that can do this; with each call, it can be set to store only the last 5 calls, or delete them all.

- trim the SMS and MMS messages to near-nothing. There is an app called Message Cleaner that you can use for this.

Also, for apps like the Internet browser, you can try clearing cache every once in a while.

If all of this doesn't help much, you can not only root with a one-click app - if you install a close-to-stock custom ROM like xtrSENSE, you can install over your existing data as it exists, keeping all of your apps, while still getting all of the benefits of rooting the phone.

I literally rooted my phone with one click while I was sitting in traffic one day. Couldn't be easier. Probably the rom that is going to give you the best fit for being close to stock is the xtrSENSE rom. Which I used and liked very much. I am now using GSB/CM7 and also like quite a bit. It's a leap of faith to root for the first time and I understand the fear. But the devs that make these procedures and roms really DO NOT want you to brick your phone. They've all worked really hard to make things as perfect as possible. Probably 80% of us still left in this particular forum have rooted our phones. If you have questions it's a good possibility that you will get a reasonably quick answer or someone will certainly tell you where to look for the information that you need. And there is PLENTY of it here.

and there's always universal eris root for dummies. you wont screw it up. both methods are listed in the root section of this forum.

And where do I get the ROM?

You can get the ROM from here:

[ROM][GPL][3/15/2011] xtrSENSE5.0.1 [cache2cache,apps2sd,oc,jit]-HTC Sense - xda-developers

However:

I agree with this. I like the Universal Root for Dummies method more, as it is extremely well documented and walks you through all of the steps that you will need in the first four posts of the thread.

That thread is here: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html

However, in your case, you would download and install xtrSENSE501.zip rather than the PlainJane ROM listed in that thread. Also, in the fourth post in that thread, there are the steps that list how you will get xtrSENSE installed on your phone. When you get to that step, you will see a step that says this:

We want to select the first action in the list: "Wipe data/factory reset"

Rather than doing that, do instead the second item on the menu: "Wipe Dalvik cache". This will preserve your apps, data, and settings that you have now on stock rather than needing to reinstall and reset everything from scratch.

If you have any further questions about rooting, it's probably better to start a thread on our "All Things Root" subforum: Eris - All Things Root - Android Forums

Along with whats already been said in the other replies I would add that once you read the steps to rooting several times and you go thru it step by step to completion. You will be very happy with the phone again. Try different Roms till you find one you like and looks they way you want. Here are a few to check out I have tried each!

[ROM][GPL] xtrROM5.0.1 odex,cache2cache,apps2sd,jit,lwp,oc[3/29/2011] - xda-developers xtrROM5.0.1

[ROM][7/27] GSB v3.8 | CyanogenMod7.1.0 RC1 [2.3.5 GingerBread NIGHTLY] - xda-developers GSB v3.8 | CyanogenMod7.1.0 RC1

[ROM] 7/12/11 Condemned CM7 V15 - xda-developers Condemned CM7 V1
