Philanthropist Morris Kahn has died, presumably from old age, at 95. A creative guy with lots of money, in his later years he focused on philanthropy particularly in the fields of science and medicine.

RIP, Mr. Kahn, with thanks for all you tried to do. Condolences to your friends, family and loved ones.

RIP to the many dead in the wake of the tragic fire that erupted at a bar as mostly young people celebrated the New Year in Crans-Montana in the Swiss Alps. I keep thinking of the many families shattered by this event, including those who will have long recoveries from serious burn injuries.

Deep condolences to all those affected by this tragedy.

Bob Weir, on of the founding members of The Grateful Dead, has died at 78. He survived cancer a few years ago but "succumbed to underlying lung issues" in the article I read.

Much, much more could be said, and I'm sure most of you have your own memories.

RIP, Mr. Weir, and thanks for all of the great tunes. Condolences to your fans, friends, family and loved ones.

I worked a job as security officer at hotel where some deadheads (devoted fans of the grateful dead) stayed. Upon arrival I was greeted by a hotel management type who made it clear he didn't like the Grateful dead and he didn't like their fans and was looking for any reason to kick them off the property. From documentaries they come off as feel love pot smoking dead beat hippies. I learned that there were two sides to this hard core fans group. First was the free love, pot smoking, dancing and singing, living their best life. Second was the military/corporate side. Everyone had a responsibility. There were those that went and found day labor jobs, some went and collected plastic bottles and aluminum cans to recycle. You had people who handle the laundry, other watched kids, meals were a soup line scenario. They would line up get a plate of whatever they were having and go back to their rooms or somewhere and eat. They were extremely organized. They were also some of the nicest people you could meet.
