Fatality: 2020

Pancreatic cancer has taken Alex Trebek from this life at age 80.

RIP, sir, and thanks for sharing your talents and helping people learn, at least a little.
I really thought he was going to beat that damned pancreatic cancer, despite its grim statistics.

He taped new episodes until just a few days ago, the 29th, I think. They're going to air through most of December.

I can't imagine a different host.

I know they've planned for this, and had Alex's input on who should replace him, but to me he's irreplaceable. I've had an ongoing thought/wish/something that it would cease production once he died. I guess that's not realistic. If I had to pick someone, I'd say Ken Jennings is the obvious choice, but who knows?

Those awful six months I spent in the hospital were made better six days a week, at 7:00pm. Bless you, Alex Trebek...rest in peace...

It was very hard watching last night's episode, but the pre-show tribute ended in a statement that put it all in perspective ... "It's what Alex would have wanted."

A friend just lost a loved one and I will repeat my advice here. "Mourn their passing, but celebrate their life and carry on their legacy."

Yes, last night was tough, but very touching and very much in keeping with Alex's spirit.

I've been hearing that the show has not yet announced whether there will be a new host. Obviously, many feel that he's just not replaceable, so we'll see. I'd say 36 years is a hell of a run for a TV show! Maybe it should be put to bed now.

I'd recorded an ABC special Sunday, and watched it last night. It was a lovely tribute to Alex Trebek, and had me laughing and crying. I don't know if it's available online, but it's definitely worth a watch if you're a Trebek fan. Really nicely done. Its name: Alex Trebek Remembered -- a 20/20 Special

The name "Ennio Morricone" may not ring a bell, but the music he wrote is in most everyone's memory. He's passed at 91 following complications after a broken leg.

RIP, Ennio, and thanks for scoring so many wonderful, haunting and catchy tunes.

Last night we started watching "Hateful Eight" that we dvr'd months ago; it's a 3-hour saga from Quentin Tarantino, and I almost fell out of my chair when I saw that Mr. Morricone scored it. (Honestly I don't think I'll make it through the movie, it's VERY talky and though there are some clever lines and great actors, it's slow and draggy. We were about :40 in when we decided to call it a night and go to bed.)

Then today I pop on to YT to look for something and Lo! and behold, there are these compilations that someone took the time to put together. It's really crazy the amount of familiar film music you'll hear if you just let these play in the background.

You're missed, Ennio, but your music will live on for ages to come. Thanks again.

Vincent Reffet, 36, a French stuntman who has thrilled many with impressive airborne feats using jetpacks and carbon-fibre wing packs, has died in a training accident in Dubai.

RIP, Vincent. Thanks for sharing your daredevil acts. It’s some consolation that you died doing something you love.

Pat Quinn, who was a co-creator of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge died Sunday at just 37. He was diagnosed with ALS seven years ago, just after he turned 30. :(

RIP, Mr. Quinn, and thanks for giving it all you had in your short time here. With condolences to your family, friends and loved ones.

As predicted [by me and millions of other Jeopardy! fans], Ken Jennings will be hosting once the show resumes filming, after Thanksgiving. However, he's just being called a guest host. They said there will be a succession of guest hosts, and that they're drawing from the Jeopardy! family. So after Ken, I imagine we'll see Brad, James, Austin...the woman who knocked James off... But I think, in the end, they'll go with Jennings. He just seems like the best choice. To me. Your opinion may vary. :)

I was just reading that, and yeah was thinking that you said it first. As well as millions of fans.

Actor Dena Dietrich has died at 91. She was an accomplished actor, but is probably best known, and fondly remembered, as Mother Nature in a series of Chiffon margarine commercials. RIP, Mother Nature!
I well remember those ads. Curiously, when I saw that name it made me think of Marlene Dietrich, and wrongly assumed they were related.

In any event, RIP to Dena, and thanks for sharing your talents for many, many years.

I well remember those ads.
Me too. You know why, right? (Hint for the uninitiated: we're over a certain age. :o)

As always, I was watching channel 5's morning news, and Sam Rubin, their entertainment guy, started rolling a clip of Dietrich in her famous role as Mother Nature, and it was so cool seeing that again! "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature!" Then the sad news that she had died.

For those who don't know, Chiffon was a brand of soft/tub margarine, and its claim to fame was how it tasted just like butter. Dietrich, as Mother Nature--in a flowing white gown, flowers in her hair, and always in a lovely forest-type setting--would taste it, declare that it was definitely nature's product, butter, then be angered when she found out it was margarine. There would be thunder and lightning as she declared, "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature!" It was cute, not scary. RIP.

Actually, it's been what, fifty-ish years since those ads ran, and as I read your initial post, in my mind I could see her dipping her finger in, tasting it, and saying something like "Ahh, my sweet, creamy butter..." and as well the jingle at the end: "If you think it's butter...but it's not! It's Chiffon!"

Yep. Fifty....ish....something...years....

Tony Hsieh, retired Zappos CEO, has succumbed to injuries in connection with a house fire. He joined the company in 1999 (different generic name) and helped build it into a monster before it sold to Amazon in 2009. Those who knew him have only kind and gracious things to say.

Tony was just 46.

RIP, Mr. Hsieh. Condolences to those who knew and loved you.

David Prowse, the 6’6” bodybuilder who played Darth Vader (James Earl Jones dubbed in his lines later) in the original Star Wars trilogy, has died at 85. He retired in 2016 due to health issues; no cause of death was reported.

RIP, Mr. Prowse, and thanks for bringing to life one of the great characters of cinema.

Yes. Sad. I drove him a few times him 88 - 92 as he was local to our cab office. He had acute mobility issues then. Became known as the Green Cross Code Man (Child Road Safety campaign) after success as a body builder.
That fame for the Darth role (and Serkis for Gollum) was always an enigma or hard to understand for me. (Gollum I later understood).
So he was only 42 ish in 1977. Glad he lived on in fair health.

RIP.
