I think in that case it's more about what's outside the pot than what's in it... ;)
 
Olbriar and I were discussing the excellent Kirkland Columbian Supremo (KCS) in another thread (best affordable coffee I've ever had), and I wanted to share a true coffee drinker's nightmare gift: Flavored Coffee.

In this case it's from someone we love, so we appreciate the thought more than the gift, but we also feel a little obliged to drink it.

Don't get me wrong...when I used to add stuff to my coffee, I liked hazelnut coffee sometimes, but now that I drink it straight, flavors just ruin it.

Some of these sound like they might be okay (at least for flavored coffee), but we started with the ones we thought would be the worst. Neither of us likes those panettone cakes, and the coffee was nearly that bad. (Curiously, the empty bag smelled pretty good.) I cut it in with our KCS and it wasn't too bad that way (about 4:1, so 1/5 flavored). The coffee tasted better than the house smelled while it was brewing.

We are now on the ginger snap one and it's better, but not great. I'm not the biggest fan of the cookies, and my wife has severe gastric issues with ginger, but at the low ratio she hasn't had any problems with the blended coffee so far.

I'm not sure which one we'll go to next. My wife is happily anticipating the peppermint mocha, but I'm not a fan of peppermint anyway, so I'm guessing she'll like that one more than I will.

In other news, we always buy whole bean and grind about two weeks' worth at a time. I do that in the garage because it is always messy, but man the garage smells so great afterwards! :)

What do the rest of you think about flavored coffee?
 
Best coffee that ever hit my tastebuds did so at the 1986 World Expo in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada. I stopped at the Ivory Coast pavilion and they offered me a cup of their coffee. It was like liquid ecstasy. I've never had a coffee experience like it since.
 
My wife would likely enjoy some flavored coffee. She enjoys coffee as much as I but she has a daily lineup of stuff she adds to her cup. I drink my coffee black. It was served black while growing up so that is the flavor I'm in love with. I'm guessing I'd pass on the coffee assortment you pictured.
 
I will say this about the campfire coffee post you quoted, hot and strong on a cold crisp morning coffee is something special. Some bacon and eggs off of that fire and you've hit the trifecta.
 
The hands-down best coffee I ve ever had is pure Kona coffee. I say 'pure' intentionally, because most "Hawaiian" coffee you find in stores is a blend, and may be only 10% Hawaiian coffee or even less. Kona has an ideal climate for growing many things, including coffee.

Pure Kona coffee is not cheap, and if I could financially justify it, it's all I would drink. As it is I usually only have it if we are having house guests (I guess that means we aren't good enough for it, but our friends are!!) :).

If you would like to try the good stuff, I can personally recommend Konacoffee.com. It's a family-owned company and I happen to know them pretty well, so you can trust what you buy from them (at least to the extent you trust me!). As with most online options you can get free shipping if you buy enough. Or heck, go to Kona and visit them, so no shipping. Plus you get a trip to Hawaii, and I'm given to understand it's rather nice there. :D

I'll check to see if my local coffee / tea vendor has it. They have quite a selection of teas and coffees. They sell local made goods but make a living off of their beans and leaves.
 
My favorite coffee so far has been Kenya AA. It comes at a premium price so it's not a daily driver at the olbriar ranch. I've tasted the Kona offering from my local grocer and it was okay. I just googled the product and it was a blend containing only 10% Kona beans. Not at all a fair taste sample.

Exactly. Likely that was Kauai Coffee, which is 10% Hawaiian. That's the only way they can make it price-competitive on grocers' shelves. But it doesn't taste very good. (I visited their factory when I went to Kauai, and even their "pure Kauai" wasn't that great, good flavor but quite acidic. There is something about pure Kona that makes it uniquely tasty.)

Hmm... doesn't seem that it tasted too harmonious... ;)

One time in a dollar store I found some "Hawaiian Coffee" in little packets. The fine print said it contained "up to" 10% Hawaiian coffee. So I guess in some sense that's true, there is some Hawaiian coffee in the bag. But to me it's false advertising...and it sure makes people think that Hawaiian coffee is not all that good.

In a related thought, the first time I went to Hawaii it was the island of Maui, I went into a Jamba Juice and had a shot of wheat grass juice (back when I was trying to be healthier). It tasted so much better than the stuff in the stores in California, I was truly surprised. I asked and the store said it was sources locally. That volcanic soil and climate makes a real difference!
