Had the same issue on Windows 7 64 bit. What really sucks is I got it all working perfectly on my Win 7 work computer but can remember everything I did so I can go home and get it running on my home pc lol.

Just rooted my phone on win7, the only issue i had was installing the first driver but putting it in vista sp2 mode worked like a charm! Thanks so much wingz your post (mini-guide) worked wonders!

Yeah you can. When you use panda you'll have to setup your screens again on the first use. It won't carry your screens over from the default home app. So start panda and readd your widgets. You only have to do it the first time.

got it, thanks!

do you know what folder to go to (using root explorer) to remove some of the stock apps? I don't know what folder they are stored in.

/system / app

long press the app you want to remove and you can copy it and paste it somewhere else in case you need to put it back. then go back to the directory and long press, delete.

You can also uninstall them using titanium backup and back them up from there. That's a bit safer and the programs free

Hey, I'm new to the forums, and I just got my Moment on March 3rd, but since I was VERY anxiously awaiting my upgrade, I have been reading up on the phone for weeks, including rooting and flashing custom kernels (SDX is in my bookmarks). I am interested and I have been reading up a lot on flashing, which has been very confusing (even for me, being very computer literate) since a lot of information is very dated and with a lot of custom kernels floating out there, but I think I am FINALLY ready to make the plunge.

Wingz' steps seem to be very informative and simple compared to other ones I've seen, so I am going to go by that and share my results later. The only question that remains is which kernel to try/try first. I am leaning towards joey's but the decision seems kind of hard. Any suggestions? I care most about stability, speed, functionality (responsiveness) and battery life. And I don't really care about tethering.

PS: My moment came preloaded with the official CL14 update, and I am under the understanding that for the newer kernels, I can use sprint's update tool instead of downgrading right? I read all the posts, I'm just making sure this is confirmed.

Any help is very much appreciated, thanks.

Totally a preference thing. Both zefie and joey as well as speeds kernels seem to be stable. They all have the same basic features. I cant tell you whos is "better" because I havent tried joey's or speeds. I personally went with zefies because Im more familiar with his work and the recovery tool was built in, however in the coming weeks Im gonna use Joey's to compare the 2. I can tell you the 14.3 kernel from zefie is extremely fast and smooth and Ive yet to have an issue.

This is correct. You can leave the cl14 on there and upgrade directly to a new kernel thru the sprint update tool. In fact you have to have cl14 for these kernels to work.

Anyone needing further help feel free to hit me up on gtalk if Im not online. Work either keeps me away from the pc or glued to it. wingzfan61@gmail.com

i rooted my phone with joeys 1.9.2 kernal, but how would i go about deleting the apps i dont want (nascar, etc) do i have to do that using my pc or can i do it on my phone?

I used a free app called titanium backup and just clicked the ones I didnt want and uninstalled them. Seems to be the safest way to do so.

Thanks so much, guys! I'm loving my phone much more w/out all the crap on it.

Can anyone recommend the best battery app or widget? I don't mind paying a little for it, but since you guys are giving such great advice, I figured I'd check with you first.

PLEASE HELP! I am trying to load joey's kernel with the Sprint Update tool, and everytime i get to "downloading" it gets to about 83% and the program force closes every time! I am using windows 7 32-bit. Please help, should I just try to load Zefie's 14.3 instead?

UPDATE: I flashed Zefie's 14.3 successfully, I am guessing it is because in Zefies, max's recoveryy is already preloaded, so can someone help me to get joey's 1.9.3 to work for me, what do I need to do with the recovery file?

just flash joey's 1.9.3 over zefie's (the same way)... joey's doesn't come with a recovery and it writes logo.png over zefie's and zImage over zefie's...

you can then flash max's recovery 2.0 to replace zefie's... i think that joey's kernel would be compatible with zefie's recovery, but i'm not positive. :)

you could do it manually, which may be faster too, but that's untested... but in theory it should work because it's doing the same thing as flashing: http://www.sdx-developers.com/index.php?topic=973

2. Manually load the tool onto the phone following these steps. If the zImage flashed below is either speedrabbit 1.5 or joeykrim-1.9.2 or later versions, bmlwrite or flash_image will be loaded in the /sbin and this procedure doesn't need to be followed.

1. Unzip the attached bmlwrite.zip and copy the enclosed bmlwrite to your /sdcard
2. Copy the zImage and logo.png you want (from the kernel tar file) to /sdcard
3. As root: cp /sdcard/bmlwrite /sbin/bmlwrite
4. As root: chmod 755 /sbin/bmlwrite
5. As root: navigate (cd sbin) to the sbin directory and type: "bmlwrite boot3 /sdcard/logo.png" --> copies the logo.png to your boot3 (VERY IMPORTANT YOU CORRECTLY TYPE/SPECIFY boot3)

6. As root: navigate to sbin (you should still be there) and type: "bmlwrite boot /sdcard/zImage" --> copies the image to boot (CORRECTLY TYPE/SPECIFY boot)

7. As root: type: "reboot" - restarts your phone

@chibucks thanks A LOT for your help. I found out what the problem was, apparently it was a problem with the original download of the kernel, I didnt see the download link at the top, so I copied and pasted the direct link, which didnt have a logo file. I didnt find this out until I checked inside the .tar with winrar and only saw a zimage file, so I tried downloading the kernel again and it was the correct one, and I tried again and it worked perfectly. Thank you for your explanation though, because when you said that joey's writes logo.png over zefies, I got confused and investigated, THERE WAS NO LOGO.PNG! Haha, so thanks for helping me get to the bottom of it.

When using the SW Upgrade to flash zefies 14.3 it wont do anything past the software download area, its just sitting there not doing anything

Same thing happened to me a few times. I had to power the phone down and start over and once I did it all worked fine.

ok so i have been using joey's for a few weeks. i just switched to zefies today and am wondering. where is the wifi tethering ability. Is it a seperate download? I looked in the apps and in the settings and cant find anything. The about phone section says i am at zefie's 14.3.

chibucks, Im trying out speedrabbits kernel and when opening wifi tether I get the "no netfilter" error. I know he says ignore it but is there anything i can install to get rid of that error? I noticed on the wiki page theres an update zip. Can that be installed to avoid the error?
