Root Finally Got It Right!

After 2 failed tries and several hours of charging my battery I have finally gotten .588 installed. Now I am off to .595 after re-downloading .595 because first zip was bad.

so i'm not trying to give anyone crap or anything, but can someone explain to me what could go wrong with flashing an update? I've done it several times and never had any problems-- and i've even accidentally tried to flash bad files (partially downloaded) and it just aborted the install, i re-downloaded and tried again fine.
whole process never takes more than five or ten minutes.

so what could go wrong? i want to know so i don't do it.

If it flashes partway and then has some kind of error or if you try and flash a file not compatible with your phone (like a droid 2 rom on a droid X or something), you might end up with bootloops that you can't solve without an SBF. Otherwise, the flash might fail just b/c you have a corrupted download or something, but nothing will stop you from trying again.

But really, the only way to really screw it up is if your battery dies mid-flash. Then you can't even SBF until you get a spare battery or find a way to charge yours. That's why you should always make sure you have a charged battery before doing anything to your phone.

Oh, and the other way is if the bootloader gets updated and there's no longer a working SBF. This has happened after an OTA went out. At that point, you no longer have the ability to completely reset everything via SBF, until a new one comes out (but that doesn't take too long). This is currently a situation that can't happen, but might be a problem after the gingerbread OTA comes out.
