Root Finally Rooted

Kamau

Android Expert
After some tense moments, I am finally in total control of my phone.
Now though, I want to trick this baby out. What are some apps to make this thing go from zero to awesome?
Also, I'd like to be able to over clock & under clock. How do I go about that?

I would install a custom ROM such as Harmonia or Unlocked Potential if you like HTC Sense. Midnight or Mobster senseless if you hate sense. There's so much you can do now it's hard to put it all into one post :).

Installing a custom ROM also will allow you to overclock. If you want to do that easily you can install Midnight or Midnight senseless. There are many other options but this one is working "out of the box" according to your needs. There's way more options than just that rom. A senseless rom removes bits and pieces of HTC sense and removes bloatware (that clogs the phone up). There's an app on that rom called Kernel Tuner which allows you to overclock/underclock, but you can of course download and install it on any rom which has overclock/underclock options.

Like EHokie said, you have to get s-offed, especially because you're talking about under/overclocking which requires a kernel flash which is so much easier than having to use fastboot or the smarflash hack in 4EXT recovery. Congrats and welcome to the dark side. :D

That's on my todo list this morning (s-off), as soon as I can find the right kind of wire.

I used a paper clip with electrical tape sheathing it. Now it took 4 tries to successfully accomplish the wire trick, and maybe a piece of wire will work better... but um.. It still took less than a minute to get it done.

I found an old adapter with the tip cut off. I'm thinking that a piece of that wire will do.
I would use the paperclip, but as with my wife & kids, regular tape is never good enough for anything. They always use my electrical tape, of which I now have none.

I used a twist tie on my technical and tool challenged buddies phone and it worked fine, I have done it to 4 different phones so I do have a bit of practice. Good luck.

Ok, this puppy has now cut the leash.
First off, how can I get rid of that annoying VM bootanimation & tune. That thing drives me up a wall.
Next, what tool should I have to better manage this root?

I personally use 4EXT recovery even though I'm s-offed, just remember that when you switch recoveries even if different versions to make a new nandroid backup because they aren't compatible.

Any rom on this forum is almost guaranteed (by me :D) to not have the pointless and annoying VM boot and sound. Just flash a custom rom such as midnight harmonia or mobster.

you can flash a diff rom or you can use this... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812621 its a real 3d boot animation and i think its really cool...

um... not sure what you mean but i recommend getting the standard root apps... wifi tether... kernel tether... rom toolbox...
...

Thanks to all.
I have downloaded & installed the Midnight rom. I cannot tell you how relaxing it is to start up my phone and not hear & see that VM nonsense they call bootanimation. :dancing:

As for the Rom Toolbox, thanks for the heads up. That looks like what I'm talking about (look at me, using fancy rooted terms, like I'm the man now.:))

edit: Just a thought. Should I get Titanium Backup as well?

Thanks to all.

definately... and backup on a weekly basis just in case your rom crashes... midnight is pretty stable but you never know...

also beware that rom toolbox does not work perfectly on sense roms... anything to do with theming or status bar icons will not work... but the cpu settings, reboot options, root browser, terminal, and task manager are very usefull and fully functioning

Thanks to all.

If I may recommend you some boot animations from rom toolbox they are "Android eats apple" and "DROID pees on apple", very funny ones to show to your iPhone friends. Also, TB is a great app. I have it set so it backups my newly I stalled apps once then my app data backup every night, so I never lose my progress on my apps even after a rom flash :).

I second this, TB set to backup all new user apps and newer versions, then to redo backups for modified data every night. I also have this upload to DropBox in the event my phone & SD Card are both a total loss (i.e. destroyed or lost)...

Definitely get Titanium, it's THE must have root app. As for the boot animation, if you think that's bad you should have experienced the older version that was on my Triumph and Intercept. So bad that the first time that I started the Evo my first thought was "that's better".

Newbie question.
You can upload your TB files to the cloud? I have box too, and this would be great.

Got another question (not to be hijacking my own thread), but is Beats Audio included with the rom I downloaded (Midnight)?
If not, then has anyone installed it? How does it sound?
I ask because the biggest uses of my phone are listening to music, and looking at my pictures.

midnight does have beats installed... i dont really think beats makes too much of a difference... my music sounds good no matter... but its up to the user... there is a small change in the sound but nothing that excites me or bothers me... so i just use it cause i can show people that my phone has that beats swag...

TiBu allows you to use 3 different cloud services for storage and like Dave said, while Beats is included in the Midnight rom it's affect is negligible. You'd have a much better and greater influence on your music by using a decent pair of headphones or a "real" music player such as Power Amp from the market.
