As stated most should work with fingernails. Some might be more temperamental than others I would say venture to the store and play with a few and see which is most responsive to fingernail touch

I've got pretty short fingernails myself (most people have a wrong impression of us scary aliens...we all have short nails
).
Anyway, I think you'll need more than just the fingernail itself to get the screen to react since I think they work on the electrical capacitance of your skin and the fingernail doesn't conduct/transmit that much signal with just the tip of your nail. I notice that when I use more of the nail surface area, I get some response, but its best when there there's some of the finger itself touching.
My best advice would be to definitely try / test the phone out in the store before making a purchase so you are comfortable and happy with your decision.
