Fire Questions

So, I'm trying to learn about the fire:

- I assume that it has a stock email app that can run any standard email account?
- Did I read that there is no calendar? What about contacts?
- I know that only Amazon App Store apps are available, but is ANY app in the amazon app store compatible, or only special ones? In other words, before I buy one, can I go into the Amazon app store on my evo and assume that any app I see there will be available on the Fire?

I just got mine today; I can answer a couple:
1. There's a stock email app that will accomodate gmail, aol, yahoo and popular email accounts. You can combine several into the same inbox (haven't tried that yet).
2. I hooked up my gmail account, and it imported my gmail contacts
3. Can't answer that one yet; I know that an app that I bought from the Android Market shows up in the Amazon Market, but it wants me to pay for the app again. This thing recognizes my Amazon account, but evidently not my Google account. I would assume that the Amazon app store on your device is the same Amazon app store on the Fire, but I can't verify that.

Let me add to this - evidently, not only are not all apps in the Android Market available on the Amazon App Market; not all apps available in the Amazon App Market are available to install on the Fire.
What I mean by that is -
I wanted to install Opera Mini as an alternative browser on my Fire. I went to the Amazon App Market on my PC, and saw it there. I thought "great - I can install it on the Fire". When I searched for it on the Fire's Amazon App Market, it didn't come up.
So - in answer to your third question: no, you cannot assume that every app you see in the AAM on your Evo is available to install on the Fire.

So what's your overall take so far? I am really conflicted on this. I really like the idea of a simple/cheap but good tablet, but I am really plugged into Google, and I feel like I need that functionality. I think that if I were really plugged into using Amazon for music storage, etc. this would be great (I do LOVE my Kindle), but if I don't want to be married to Amazon, seems like this is not the best option for me.

The new Sony tablet and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 plus are good alternatives, but THEY COST A LOT MORE, over twice as much. Think of it this way, the tablet market is moving fast with better products all the time.

I plan to get a more powerful tablet later.

Amazon Market will probably get more apps in time. They are trying to protect consumers from not great and nearly malicious apps. You can learn to use your PC to load apps on a Kindle Fire for those situations that Amazon Market does not have you covered.

I wrote my initial responses a week ago; a lot has gone down since then. This being a device using the Android OS, people have come up with all kinds of workarounds, including the ability to load Google apps. Check this forum and xda developers and you'll see what I mean.

I thought this device was ok when it appeared that you could only use it only as amazon intended. But now, just a week after release, you can go far beyond that very easily. If you're already familiar with Android, to me, its a no-brainer - this is a great deal for 200 bucks.

After using mine for the past week, I love it! In fact I've ordered them for my kids as well. :)

As a media consumption device it can't be beat, particularly with Amazon's infrastructure to support it.....that is as long as you are mostly in wifi range.

The majority of apps that are on the Amazon Appstore will work on the Fire. I downloaded many free apps of the day previously for my phone, and they were all available to me for the Fire.

There will be some exceptions, but you can get a good idea of what is in the Appstore from your phone.

one weirdness that I've run into is that since downloading some apps onto my Fire --- Xmarks for example --- the Amazon App store on my Xoom wants to "Upgrade" the Xmarks on the Xoom that I got from the Google App Store. And there doesn't seem to be an option for removing it from the "upgrade" list/notice.

Anyone know how to prevent that sort of stuff when you use multiple app stores?
