Help firmware update for samsung galaxy spica gt i5700

I am from Canada and my phone is Rogers (my service provider) branded. I really want to update my phone but when I go into the about screen on my phone the Model Number is: GT-I5700R. For people in the rest of the world isn't it GT-I5700? If I install a European firmware for example would everything work or would it be ok? If something doesn't work is there a way to go back to 1.5? Do I loose the crap that the service provider from who I bought the phone put on? Also is the installation process just the normal instalation process from Home

The R might be there merely because the North American HSDPA bands for rogers are 850/1900 and not the ones you would normally find on the phone. I know of at least one user on samdroid.net who flashed his rogers galaxy spica without a problem. beyond that, the hardware itself should all be the same, and thus there shouldn't be any harm in flashing any official firmware onto any phone.

It's kinda like how its the same android firmware for a google nexus one regardless of where the phone is.

Where did you find the firmware/was is hard to install?
i downloaded the firmware, odin application and operating sytem file. then using the guide i could update my phone easily. you can google all the information.
its neither difficult not risky too iff you are not a dumb ass! go ahead buddy!

best of luck

Thx I got it to work yesterday and I am very happy I upgraded. No more lag on games and phone seems faster. When I go to the about screen now the model doesn't have the R their anymore, but I don't really care about it everything still works. The upgrade though is well worth it.

I tried to update last night and today, both times Odin's clock kept counting upwards and i was forced to pull my USB cord at around 4 hours.
I give up, I dunno what to do, I want 2.1 but I guess I'll have to wait a couple months for an official release in Canada.

You will need to get the new version 1.4 pc studio. Windows XP SP3

Then I downloaded the auto mount program from the market, then ticked the usb debug.

I started the software then plugged my phone in it was found on the second attempt.

It said that an update was available and I proceeded with this which was a version of the 1.5. after this installed, I turned off the phone unplugged it then turn it back on.
Then again connected it to the PC again it found available update then clicked on it and it started downloading it, the phone then turned it self off and then back on. Now i have 2.1 and it comes straight with the 3 home pages, you have then to press the up arrow button and then select edit. Click the plus symbol to add a home page then select the one you want.

There are some good features and some bad everyone has different tastes so I will not go into these just to say the phone is better for me, yet I still feel a little let down there is not more features available.

I hope this helps.

it says on the guide to "Release the SIM lock" by dialling *#7465625# but it only shows the status. how do i go about releasing the SIM of my phone?

I never bothered to.

I just opened the back slightly when it said to.

It is still working fine without any problems.

hi, iv flashed my spica from 1.5 to 2.1 now everything is working fine but i dunno how to connect to the net using the wifi. i have registered on the network and hav an ip address assigned to the fone. the server ip opens on the browser but other websites dont open. It seems i have to bypass proxy or something, and these settings are supposed to be in the browser but are not. can ne1 provide me info on how to access these settings. thx

#7465625*638*<unlockcode>#

But you need to get an unlock code first. Also, this isn't THAT sim lock. This sim lock is referring to the one you can set under security on your phone, so everyone has to enter a code before using the phone.

Take Note that there are different firmwares available for each region. The Firmware mentioned by faixan.6x in the above guide is the Asian one.

There are others availble. Here are the latests version no's for each region.

So, got past that screen, and my phone is boned. All I'm getting is a samsung screen with a progress bar. Nothing more, and the Volume down and Camera key thing isn't putting my phone into USB mode... help..
Nevermind, I was able to get to USB mode, but I'm still stuck with bum software

Well, thats all sorted out. Running, SLOWLY but running. I'm now in the process of trying to figure out live wallpapers and other things! Thanks for the guide!

live wallpapers dont work on every kernel version available for spica! i guess some of the livewallpapers work on ....JB2 version. but it is now the older one.
check out http://androidmodz.com/tutorials/16-how-get-live-wallpapers-working-your-mobile-phone.html about the tutorial that can help you out!

I found this impossible as my Spica was not recognised by Kies or New PC Suite (although it mounted) and I didn't want to risk wiping my phone by reprogramming it.

I took it into my network provider's store (T Mobile) and they sent it away for the software to be updated. It came back a week later with Eclair on it (free of charge).

Just to let others know that there is this option available to them, if they are struggling as I did.

Ok, I need some help, and I have searched a bit and I'm getting tired. Rogers, Spica 5700R, running stock UXJA8, Cupcake. I think I am looking for UXJG9 (is this the latest update for Canada/Rogers)?
D/L'd the JG9 file from here -> multiupload.com/FOZT0MQNQ9 (via Samfirwares). However it unpacks into some .bin and .rfs files. Not sure where to go from there. I have ODIN 4.03 but if I understand correctly, I need some .tar files. I looked in some of the Euro spec files and they unpack into the correct .tar files. Also, where is spica.ops?

TIA.
Resolved: Found Spica.ops and realized you put the JG9.TAR compressed file in the "one package option" field in ODIN. Updated OK.

I need help upgrading my GT-i5700 fone to firmware 2.1. Kindly give me a guide or website where I get get the guide and all that I need to download.

Baseband Version: i5700XXIK2
Kernel Version 2.6.27 (root@dell2-desktop)
Build number: CUPCAK.XXIL3

Thank you.

guys finally i got eclair working in my fone gt5700. it is obviously an unofficial way but pretty easy. just search for guide "how to update firmware of spica" n you can do it yourself. you have to download a firmware 2.1 of any choice of baseband version and a ODIN application. i guess least chances of bricking your fone. if you are not dumbest in the world then go for it. you can do it easily as i did. eclair is great and finally bluetooth works in my fone. feeling like nexus! hahhaha....
any help regarding update, you can ask me. i will tell you exactly what to do.

Having the same problem. Seems to connect with the latest PC suite from Samsung, but when you go to upgrade no phone is found.

Anyone know a solution? Don't really want to send the phone away.
