OK, so it's time to update your phone.
Firmware version is 2.3.5 as of 1/1/2012
And it will take multiple updates to get you there if you haven't been updating.
So find a comfortable place with good reception and a fully charged battery or charger plugged in (don't want to be halfway through an update when power goes out)

Check your progress?
Slide down Notification Bar
Your phone will download the complete update, wait about a minute and get a blue acknowlegement OK, then update the phone (box and android), do a reset, then you are ready - go back to check new.
From time to time the Verison Server goes offline, just try later.
And this is why the firmware is downloaded first, then updated.
