If your phone is not rooted, (therefore unable to install custom ROM's), and you do not wish to void your warranty, then you will have to use Samsung Kies, PC programme, and connect your phone by USB to check for and download any available updates for your handset firmware.

The other way is to use Odin v1.85 and download a stock firmware for your handset. For more information on this see here:-

Samsung Kies

Hope this helps. :D

Thanks for the reply. I tried Kies and it doesn't show any upgrades available. Now the problem with odin is that i don't know which version of firmware to choose and that's what i would like to know.

So from the link under ironass' flashing with odin I would go for kk5 or KL3. They should both be fine. The only one I can't recommend is KL1 as its caused problems.

I personally went with KK5 Frankenstein version, then flashed KP8 modem and am very pleased. You can flash different modems and see which one performs best for you.

Go to settings, about phone, scroll to kernel version. You will find i9100 then 5 letters. Mine is i9100dxkl3 the 5 letters I mean is dxkl3 that your firmware. Dx would be for Asian. Yours could be different. KL3 K for 2011, L for December release, 3 for version in that month.

I'm not going to argue about that bomfox but I think Dris wanted to know what to update to . Let's not confuse things?

Ooo ok, sorry. Just want to tell dris how to choose firmware.
And for kies not to show update, two possibilities, 1. No update for Dris region yet. 2. Dris could be using a none stock combination.
Dris, just look for two first letters and look for latest update with that prefix at xda. Or you could post what your two prefix, I'll look for it at intratech thread.

@bomfox
My firmware is XXKI1 if that helps.

@Shotgun
So if i flash any of those firmwares you suggested, am i going to be ok given the firmware i currently use?

Thanks guys!

If you are going to flash a different stock firmware you don't need to change the kernel first as it will get changed along with the firmware. But if you want to flash a custom rom you will need to flash an insecure kernel first as you need to be rooted to do this.

Today i took the big step of upgrading from 2.3.4 KI4 to 2.3.6 KK5 Frankenstein version successfully. I have to mention that my apps and settings remained as they were. Thanks guys!

Since you're in India I have to double check you don't have the G version.

If you have DO NOT flash firmware from here as it will mess up your phone.

But if you have the standard gti9100 international you can update your firmware from here

@1981 - I am also in India and i recently updated my phone to 2.3.6 using KIES. Try it once again and check.

I have tried checking for update from inside the settings menu. which showed no update available.
KIES which you mentioned is, connecting the SGS2 via usb to the computer and checking for update through that software??
also did u find any major goodies after the upgrade?
thank you
