Firmware Updates? Automatically? Or Manually?

Sprint Pushing Maintenance Update to HTC Hero

Well I just checked Firmware Updates and it says there's an update available on my phone. Downloading now...

Menu --> Settings --> About Phone --> System Updates --> Firmware Update

Question:

Do we have to do this manually?

Or, do we get notified when we're supposed to do this?

I suppose that following Sprint HTC Hero news and forums will alert us if it's the former, but I'd like to know if the only way to do this is via the steps above.
