Help Firmware Updates Toast mSD card?

ScandaLeX

Wasn't Me
Hello All.

Not sure if I should put this topic in general or support but this is my issue and I'd like to know has this happened to anyone else?

Just as the title says I've come to realize firmware updates are frying my sd cards.
The first time a card became toast was immediately after the last firmware update. I didn't put 2 + 2 together; just chalked it up to the card going bad despite it having worked flawlessly for months.

Last night I updated to 4.1.2 and immediately after (exactly like last time) I started seeing a notification that my card was improperly removed or something to that effect. The minute I saw that I was like no no no....not again.

So now I'm sitting here with 2 totally worthless 32gb mSD cards that my phone, macbook, & win desktop cant see.

Lesson here for me is to remove the card prior to updating.
Both updates were done with official firmware via Odin.

I'm so mad right now I don't know what to do with myself.

I have had 2 32gb SanDisk cards go out on me but not after software updates. I just figured it had to be something wrong with the 32gb cards.

I only have a class 10 Pny 16gb card with no problems after 2 updates, is anyone else having problems with 32gb cards?

If it hadn't been for this happening again in the same fashion I might not have attributed the first lose to the update.
Both cards went out identically.

The update for me went pretty well. But prior to getting a replacement, whenever my phone would boot up it would do the routine checking sd card setup. One day it said I had an error and couldn't recognize it. took it out and placed it in my laptop and read it. Not sure if it was the OS that caused the error or the device itself. Since my replacement I haven't had a card error issue yet.

SN: when you got your Note 2, did your screen feel slippery? my fingers just glide over the screen effortlessly unlike my original Note 2 before my replacement. I was wondering if using alcohol to clean my screen with my first note 2 took off the finish on the Gorilla glass because it did not feel like the one i have now and the replacement I received was a new device.

Oh No! Wow, I'm sorry to hear what happened, but I'm also glad you posted that info. I had no clue that this can happen. I've never run into that issue (knock on wood).

What make was your last SD card, I have heard of the manufactures replacing them, worth a shot. ;)

That's weird. I've flashed stock firmware on my Note 10.1 3-4 times with my 32GB (Sandisk) card in it using ODIN. No problems with it. Updated OTA my Note 2 with 32GB (Samsung) with no issues as well. I'll probably be more cautious now on any updates and make sure I remove the card prior to. Just to be on the safe side.

Hmmm, my coworker just updated his Sprint variant N2 and he can't go past 5 hours becuase the battery discharges so dang fast now. The phone also gets real warm, he just restored to try and remove the latest update.

That's crazy it's weird that some devices are effected on the same carrier while others are perfectly fine. My replacement came with one update but then prompted me to update to 4.1.2

Since the update to 4.1.2 mine has also been burning thru battery usage. Originally I could go almost 24hrs on one battery now I'm switching them every 7hrs or so and my usage of the phone hasn't changed.

Beautiful Widgets was draining my battery like crazy, after the latest updates. Not sure if you guys use that, but I had to change it to manual updates, just to get the phone back to normal battery usage.

Nope. Not using BW. Wish I could blame the drain on an app.

Another thing to keep in mind. I'm pretty sure LucidMike had mentioned something about the 4.1.2 update (on the International Note 2) including the increase of screen brightness by something like 400% (can't remember the exact number, but it was significant). Might want to see if that is the cause of the extra drain.

I have a download code for a free copy of RescuePro Deluxe if you want it. It came with one of my SanDisk cards. It works with all cards not just SanDisk. Might be worth a try.
Again my thanks to you!!!!
Eventually my macbook and win desktop recognized the cards. RPD saw all pics but none of the 13 movies on one card and the other was unreadable as it had converted to RAW format.
Also both cards reverted to read only and I can't tell you how close I was to just dropping them in the trash.

Confused yet?
If not, I was.

For the card that I was having a bit of success with I placed it in a camera to format. Something about doing that made it read/write instead of read only. From there I was able to copy it's contents to my laptop then reformat it.

Lesson learned.... RUN like hell from all firmware updates. :D
Ok I won't run but I will remove my sd card.

Were they Sandisk? Could you recover anything?
Yes both are Sandisk 32GB.
No. Could only recover one of them.

Do you know if this would this apply considering I keep my brightness low?
If I remember right I think Mike said visually we couldn't see the 400% difference. I'd have to go back and watch that again.

I honestly don't know. If you keep brightness on low, I'm guessing that's not the contributing factor to your significant battery drain. Just trying to mention all the things, off the top of my head, that might be contributing based on what I remember 4.1.2 update including that wasn't there prior.

So my battery isn't suffering from horrible drain but like everyone else my wifi feels the need to turn on even if I turn it off. Here's my usage so far today. Haven't used it much only for 3 hrs or so

Sounds like that Connections Optimizer is enabled for you. Go into Settings>MoreSettings>Mobile networks>Connections Optimizer>Click Back Button when disclaimer pops up>Make sure that Connections Optimizer toggle is unchecked>Click Back Button

I've done this since day 1 and it has worked exactly like I wanted and wifi only turns on when I actually toggle it.

Thanks to those that replied back and have confirmed that the expedited battery drain is not an isolated incident in this latest update. Its a bummer since now you folks have to wait for a new update, my coworker would stream music all day while doing some browsing and texting and would have around 35-40% battery life left at the end of his tour, now he can't leave it off the charger for more than 5hrs.

I don't have connection optimizer enabled yet my WiFi is all over the place. Sitting right here my phone will leap onto a different network for no good reason.
4.1.2 is (IMO) more trouble than it's worth.

Wow, really? My wifi doesn't notify me at all, when I'm away from a wifi connection that I haven't stored to remember. Still works just like I prefer (enable wifi whenever I want it on).
