Firmware upgrade problem

First of all, I have to say thanks to this wonderful community, for all the help it provides.

So, ladies and gents, thank you all for the support.

Now, for my problem. I looked through a bunch of posts, and could not find an answer.

I bought a 2nd hand note 2, and I'd like to upgrade the firmware. I tried via the phone a few times ( with it plugged into the charger), but it says "internet has stopped". Than I tried via Kies, but it says this:

"your device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via kies."

I tried to upload a pic, but since I'm new, I'm not aloud.

I'm not sure if the device is rooted or not, but I think it might be. I use X-plore, and when I open it I'm able to see 3 partitions: SDcard, Ext sdcard and root.

Can I update? I have OS version 4.1.1, info received via all-in-one-toolbox, app downloaded after reading herea a few lines.

Thanks again!

Hi

Have a look at this

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923956

This app makes it all ready if you put some time in sizing it before you jump in and mess it up!

If it's already rooted you will have either superuser or supersu already installed as apps. I would not bother with kies and stick with mskips app which allows installation of stock roms as well as custom ones

Suggest you subscribe to the note 2 all things root forum for 2 way help

You can check the device by going into download mode.

To access it:
1) Power down the device
2) When powered off, press the Home + Volume Down + Power button all at once
3) Press Volume Up to Continue

It should display on the upper left hand corner of the screen information about ODIN MODE:

PRODUCT NAME: xxx
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official

If it lists something else in what I bolded, then the 2nd hand Note 2 has been rooted and most likely flashed a custom ROM.

To exit this screen, simply press and hold the power button until the phone reboots.

Another method would be to go to Settings>About device>Status
Scroll down to Device status and it should say Normal. I think if rooted, it will state 'Modified'.

Best method to check for updates will be to go to Settings>About device>Software update>Update

If your device has the latest ROM, it will pop up "The latest updates have already been installed".

In which case, there are no updates available and you have the latest. So KIES will not work either.

KIES generally states that if there are no updates available.

Thanks a lot for your quick answers guys.

I have SU installed, so it means it's rooted. I just updated the app this morning.

Now, I'm trying to update the Software via wi-fi,hope it works. It's 204,7 MB, and as I'm writing it's at 30%. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi again.

So, I downloaded all the update package, but it failed to install, and now i don't know where the phone stored it, so I can try again. I had 3 options after I the download:
-cancel
-install all
-install.

I chose the 3-d, and around 40% it crushed.

This is what it says in Odin Mode:
odin mode
product name: gt-n7100
custom binary download: yes (3 counts)
current binary: samsung official
system status: official

And in settings/about device/ is says "normal"

So, the phone knows it's software is not up to date, but it won't install.

Any idea where the software update package is saved? If it is...?

Okay, the previous user did not reset the flash counter. That is triggering the update to fail. There is an app called triangle away that should reset the flash counter. Unfortunately, my knowledge here is limited as I have not rooted our run custom ROMs.

As for the update, it might be in the cache. Or in an update folder somewhere in the device. Now that we know it's been running custom ROMs, best place to seek better help is in the all root section of the forum.

Well, the guy who sold it to me runs a a phone repair shop, and I hope I can get in touch with him next week (due to my schedule) I'll let you guys know what happened.
Also, I couldn't find the update in cache or anywhere else.
Till then, thanks to all of you for the support!
