Help First Android USB Connection Problem HELP

Lurker
I just got my first android (RAZR M running 4.1.1) and there is one thing I can’t figure out. I’m pretty tech savvy so you don’t have to dumb down your answers.

I want to transfer my music to my 32 GB micro SD card that is already installed on the phone. The problem is that when I plug the phone into my laptop, the “My Computer Screen” does not show a mass storage device; instead it shows drive E: “Device Manager” which cannot be opened and has a total size of 32.3 MB and no free space.

When I try to open it, the “Welcome to Motorola Device Manager” Screen pops up and tries to download a driver or something. I’m pretty sure that once it downloads I can use the phone regularly, but the download always reaches 99% and says “No internet Connection.” I have tried this on both my computers (XP and Windows 7) and both have very fast (25mbps) internet connection. I also tried downloading directly from Motorola’s website and I got the same failure. When I open the settings > storage on the phone I get error message 1001 which says “We are having trouble connecting.” When selecting how the phone is displayed when connected to a computer, the only choices are “Media Device” and “Camera”, no Mass Storage USB.

Does anyone know why the driver won’t download and the phone will not act as a mass storage device? Thanks for any answers, I’m desperate and have tried everything.

I don't know why the Motorola device manager is causing you problems but I don't use it. To use your device for mass storage like you want you need to be sure USB debugging is enabled on the device. Go to settings and developer options and tick the box. Windows should recognise it then. Sorry if you've already done that.

thanks for the suggestion. I turned usb debugging on and connected it to the computer. The phone recognized that it was plugged into a computer as a media device and the found new hardware wizard launched on the PC. However, nothing showed up in "My Computer" and there was no way to see or access the phone on the PC. I continued to try the found new hardware wizard but the process failed. I have never experienced anything like this.

I think the problem is with the Motorola PC software, its buggy, Samsung kies is the same. The ways I transferred music to get round this are either Windows media centre and sync or using a service like drop box. Wish I could tell you more.

Do you have a micro sd card adaptor? I never use software to transfer files...just plug the card in my computer and use windows explorer.

Thanks for the responses. I finally got the motorola device manager to download by using a different computer and copying the files with a usb cable. I thought this might fix the problem of the phone not appearing in "My Computer," but it didnt. I cant transfer anything if the drive does not show up, but when plugged in the phone knows it is connected to a computer and the device manager and "found new hardware wizard" launch so I know the connection is established. Does anyone know why it is not showing up?

Are you on Verizon? I've got a similar problem with my newly purchased M. It looks like the Verizon software makes the phone default to their new Backup Assistant Plus whenever you connect it.
It looks like unless I want to root the phone to get out from under their control, I'll have to pay the pricks a monthly fee for media storage.
Anyone know a way around this?

Well, don't ask me exactly how it's different, but you have to use a Motorola specific cord. A standard USB to micro USB won't work.
Using the cord I got with the phone, my Macs now connect with the Android Transfer app. I was able to drag the whole itunes music folder onto the music file on the phone's SD card.
I'm happy now :o
