Root First custom ROM - more harm than good? (CM issues)

Vance

Android Enthusiast
Ever since flashing Cyanogenmod, I have been having strange texting issues.

I use ChompSMS, and there was a time when both that and the stock SMS client were giving me pop-ups, so I was getting double everything. I fixed that then, but it came back when I flashed the new rom.

So, I went and froze the stock messaging app with Titanium. That solved the problem partially. Now, whenever anyone sends me a text, I don't get that text, the only thing that happens is that I get a pop up of an old message (the same one every time), using the stock messaging pop-up, even though it is frozen and the data cleared.

What is going on and what can I do?

Update, I started thinking that Chomp may not work unless the stock app was running, so I unfroze it, and I am getting messages again. But, they are doubled again. I need to figure out how to turn off the pop up notifications on the stock app. I did it once, but don't remember how. Time to dig back into some old posts!!

just go to the settings menu in the stock app, and disable notifications. It's two clicks.

Yes, I have tried that, the notifications in the stock app are unchecked and I have rebooted twice, but the pop-up still comes up, along with a very annoying notification music that is NOT what I chose for notifications (and it won't go away until I close the pop-up or reply).

When I was on stock, the notification went away with just the uncheck and reboot. Not sure why it is not working now.

I have been happily using Titanium Backup Pro before and after flashing CM 6.2.1, but suddenly TiBU won't run. It says that it can't run without Busybox being installed. So, I try to re-install BB from the BB app, but it says it can't install. I downloaded it again, tried both versions which are included in the app, but neither will install, and TiBU still not running. I have rebooted a couple of times, with no change.

What can I do now?

Update, I also tried using the "Problems" button and getting busybox that way, but just got the "fail" message.

This is my first custom ROM (CM 6), and I am running into more problems than any benefits I can see, and I am getting frustrated. I was rooted before, using Launcher Pro and all was going well, but I was afraid that the new OTA update coming would break my root, so I took the plunge.

First, I can't connect to any open wifi and, until I turned it off, it kept scanning, running my battery down.

Second, my Titanium has stopped working (did OK for a bit after the flash, then went *poof*). It can't find busybox, thinks the phone is not rooted. Going through the "Problems", uninstall, reinstall, etc, and nothing. Downloaded busybox installer and it said it can't install it.

Third, suddenly I can't get the stock messaging app from giving me pop-ups for text messages (I did get it to stop giving notifications in the taskbar by unchecking notifications, but this did not help with the pop-ups, even after a couple of reboots).

Fourth, I have gotten Launcher Pro force closes a few times, causing a redraw even though that problem had been solved before (and I have checked the appropriate box in LP and added the fix code in an terminal emulator).

On the positive side, I have music controls in my lock screen and I have more space freed up in my internal storage (which is very helpful).

Well, there's always the good old fashioned manual way. Oh but wait, there's more! Yes, that's right, I put an 'update.zip' style file together for someone else once. It's full name is "busybox_install_update.zip" and can be found in my Droid Files link in my sig. Install it with your favorite custom recovery the usual way.

If you need the manual method, I can do that as well, just let me know.

good luck

Well, I'm not trying to be a post police, but you started this thread at 03/11/2011 11:26am forum time. However, you also started a thread 03/11/2011 8:36am forum time that already mentioned part of the problem you mention here. Link:

http://androidforums.com/droid-all-...ox-wont-install-titanium-wont-run-result.html

So, now I ask, what do you want to do? Address all of your problems here in one thread or just the busybox part for which I already answered in the above linked thread?

The rest of the problems you report in this thread seem to have a lack of a data/cache wipe and/or a simple reboot flavor to them, but that's all I'm going to say for now, since there (IMHO) alot of holes in this thread, first of which; I highly doubt there's EVER going to be another OTA update for the Motorola A855.

First, to address your doubts about a Droid OTA:

Motorola Droid OTA update to FRG83G starting today [Breaking News] | Android Community

As for where I would like my questions answered, I posted the other thread to ask for help, this was just a venting thread, to explain my experience. If any would like comment, commiserate or do have any helpful hints, great. If not, it just adds to the collective data for the group.

And I did to a complete wipe using ROM Manager before I flashed. In fact, I just let Rom Manager do the work for all of it other than my Titanium backup.

Very good! If the Titanium folks don't have a fix on their app end, I will likely use your zip file, thanks!

Since three of your threads are very similar to each other (and can probably be answered under one), I'm going to consolidate them for you

hmm... the plot thickens!

seems 99 out of 100 times when im reading in a thread that "i flashed so and so and now i have this or that issue" that somewhere in that thread i will also read "and i used rom manager to flash so and so"

i keep sayin this, and ill say it again: dont use rom manager. a few people are gonna chime up and say "well i use rom manager and never had a prollem" and thats fine. but it doesnt change the fact that rom manager can,and does, cause some wierd issues on occasion. IMO the safest, and least potential causing method of getting new roms to your phone is to download to pc,transfer to phone via usb,and backup, wipe, flash in recovery. either on your phone,or on the pc,generate an md5 sum and compare it to the sum the developer lists for his download, whenever possible to ensure any issues that do pop up are not due to an incomplete or corrupt download.

i ran cm6 and dint have any of the issues you have. im now running cm7 and do not having any of the issues that you have(tho i use the stock mms app).

The rest of the problems you report in this thread seem to have a lack of a data/cache wipe and/or a simple reboot flavor to them
going along with the above statement, id be willing to bet if you do a clean, fresh install by downloading cm6 again on your pc and transfer it,then flash it in recovery after wiping data, cache, and dalvic cache that your issues will disappear.

my 2 cents. :)

hmm, interesting. ROM Manager says it does a complete wipe and TiBU says it does a complete restore. I suppose if you let an automated process do the work, the more likely you are to have something go wrong. But, for most of us who are not as familiar with this, I feel fairly certain I am more likely to screw up one of the steps than ROM Manager! :0) But next time I may do it the manual way.

The problem is that I can't even flash clockwork recovery with TiBU since that won't run. And I would have to use another method to make a backup to restore from.

I gave up on Chomp for now and am just going with stock sms to solve that issue (which is tough because the stock is pretty unattractive).

what does clockwork have to do with titanium? you can flash clockwork from rom manager, you can download rom manager from the market if you dont have it. then... dont use rom manager for anything else ;)

the steps are simple.
1)put rom on root of sd card
2)boot into recovery
3)make a nand backup
4)wipe data/factory reset
5)wipe cache
6)advanced options/wipe dalvic cache
7)flash rom

nothing to it :D

last and not least,do not use titanium backup to restore system settings.prolly doesnt hurt when going from one 2.2 rom to another, but definately not when going to 2.3 from 2.2. i think its a good practice to only use titanium for apps and their associated data.

+1 ^^^ this. About the only thing I use rom manager to automate is creating and restoring backups, otherwise when flashing I follow a similar (but shorter) process as outlined above. And the part I bolded is why I don't even use TiBu at all. MyBackupPro does everything I want and better than TiBu. And now there's evenj the free version, MyBackupRoot.

Oh, yes, I forgot that Clockwork was on the ROM Manager and not on Titanium. I downloaded MyBackUpRoot, but it also thinks my phone is not rooted, could that be the busybox problem?

Can one of you give me an exact walkthrough of how to install it? A reference to "the usual way" doesn't help me since I have never done it! :0)

I decided to get My Backup Pro since the "Root" version wasn't working and I am using it now to backup the apps, not the system data. My question would be whether I will need to backup my system data somehow before trying to reflash this rom, or try another?

Third, suddenly I can't get the stock messaging app from giving me pop-ups for text messages (I did get it to stop giving notifications in the taskbar by unchecking notifications, but this did not help with the pop-ups, even after a couple of reboots).

This isn't an issue with the stock messaging app, the stock messaging app doesn't have pop ups. The only notification it uses is the one in the taskbar. If you are getting pop ups with the stock messaging app you are using another app to do it, you would need to find that app and either remove it or turn off the pop ups.

Really, that is VERY interesting! That would make a lot of sense since I had the notifications turned off. Maybe it is something in Cyanogen Mod? I will try to attach a picture of the notification. Doing some research, it looks like an older version of SMS Popup, but this app is not installed on my phone. Did Android decide to include a similar feature? Did CM add this feature? Very strange, but I don't see how to turn it off.

Not sure if there was a feature in CM 6 (I'm using CM 7). I know that it was not added into Android and I don't ever remember it being in CM 6, I know that it isn't in CM 7.

If there was such a feature it would be in either the CM settings (under your normal settings menu), or in the Messaging app settings. However that does indeed look like SMSPopup.

Could it be something with Chomp?

you need to do some research on installing a rom via a custom recovery. you can flash teddyearp's busybox file the same way.

i use raidzero recovery so i cant tell you the exact steps. but in a nutshell:

first make sure you can boot into recovery. hold the powerbutton. since youre on cm6 you can pick "reboot" then "recovery" and your phone should boot into a black screen with green letters(i think... this will be clockwork 2.5.x.x)

for now, just pick the option to reboot and go back to your operating system. use the volume keys to go up or down, camera to select. power button takes you back a menu.

now go to teddys sight: Droid files as is linked in his signiture

scroll down till you see the one named "busybox_install_update.zip" as he described. click it and download it to your pc. transfer it to the root level of your phones SD card via usb cable(root means not inside any other folder)

now boot into recovery again.
-go to the flash zip menu.
-pick install form sd card
-pick the busybox_install_update.zip
-pick yes to install from the middle of the "no dont install" options
-reboot your phone. i think you will need to push the power button to get back to the main menu to reboot.

when your phone reboots, you should have busy box.

as we have told you,i think alot of your prollems will not be prollems if you flash cm6 again on a clean slate,as described by me above in post 15. i know its in convenient to set it up again, but in the long run it will be well worth it to be happy with your phone.

id do that first. if you still have prollems with titanium, then install teddys busy box.

but as we have said, make sure you DO NOT RESTORE ANY SYSTEM SETTINGS only apps.

but as we have said, make sure you DO NOT RESTORE ANY SYSTEM SETTINGS only apps.

Great, I will follow those steps. So, you mean don't restore any system settings from anywhere, not just from Titanium. Got it.

Edit: went to install that file via USB and when it first came up and I told it to connect, it spun for a bit, then froze and rebooted the phone. Now, hooking up a USB cable does nothing at all. I don't get the prompts to connect. Which makes flashing a ROM the manual way a bit difficult as well.

Edit 2: well, now I can't access any of the apps that are being run from the SD. I have rebooted a few times, no change. So, I decided that the only way I would be able to get a downloaded ROM to my SD card would be use Chrome to Phone to send the link, then download it directly onto the phone, then use a file manager to move it to the SD root file and go from there. That is what I am doing now.

Sounds like your sdcard is getting borked. Either that and/or try a different usb port or different usb cord. This is one reason why I don't bother much with running apps from my sdcard. Every read/write to the sdcard is going to increase the odds of the card failing.

good luck

OK, things seem to have righted themselves. For some reason even when the apps would not run, I found I could still access data off of the card, so I figured the card was still good, and it was something in the ROM that was wacky.

With the other problems, I decided to try a different ROM and followed the steps I mentioned above. I sent the download link to my phone via Chrome-to-Phone and as soon as it downloaded, I long pressed it thinking I could copy it from there, then paste it onto my SD card and follow the manual flashing procedure. But, instead Rom Manager started right up on the process of flashing a new ROM, asking of I wanted to backup the existing ROM, etc. I decided to give Rom Manager one more try and let it ride on through.

So, now I have Peter's new Gingerbread ROM and the flashing went fine, and all is well. I really like the ROM a lot, wifi works, SD card works, I have more free internal space, and Titanium seems to work fine (although I am probably going to just use My Backup Pro).

With so much extra internal space, I am taking your advice, though, and running more off of the internal and less off of SD! :0)
