First impressions (VM)... should I cut my losses?

I bought the Victory because my Triumph was on its way out with some hardware issues.

A few gripes/nags which I have with it at the moment are building up and making me consider returning it and getting the Galaxy SII (I'm on Virgin Mobile btw.)

-Keyboard resetting: I use Swiftkey, and at least once or twice a day I find that the phone's started using the Samsung keyboard instead of Swiftkey, even though Swiftkey is set as the default.

-Orientation: while most apps rotate appropriately to landscape, the home screen WILL NOT ROTATE at all and appears to be fixed in portrait.

-Lag/home button: I do experience a bit of lag on this phone, and when I accidentally double press the home button the "S Voice" app comes up and I can't seem to change that behavior.

Would rooting allow me to alleviate some of these issues? I've rooted previous phones before but I don't want to go through the effort of rooting, finding out I can't fix these problems, then unrooting to send it back.

Any and all input appreciated. Thanks!

I would suggest keeping the phone over the S2, I hear it is less responsive and it sure costs a bit more for not offering a whole lot extra in my opinion.

  • You can fix the home button lag issue by hitting it twice to open up S voice and hitting the settings button while in S Voice and there is a box you can uncheck that will disable double tapping home to open S Voice. It also reduces that lag issue.
  • Rooting would fix the keyboard issue. I had that issue as well and it seems it is something even S2 owners are having an issue with as well I believe. By rooting, you can make a backup of the Swype and Samsung Keyboard that are preinstalled and just delete them and keep your Swift Keyboard and it will always be default.
  • As far as I know, none of the phones allow home screen to be in landscape mode. I've had the Optimus V, Optimus Elite, Evo V, Triumph, and now the Victory. You had to do a custom rom for that if I am understanding your concern correctly. So yes, it is fixed in portrait.
Hope this helps you!

changing the svoice setting definitely helped with my homescreen lag. thanks for that tip, even though it wasnt intended for me lol

and yeah, i dont know of any unrooted phones that switch to landscape mode on the homescreen.if you dont feel like rooting it, install GoLauncher EX or any other launcher
