Help First mains charge caused crazy behaviour

My wife got a new HTC Desire HD Android 2.2 phone yesterday and we observed some strange behaviour when plugging the device in to charge from mains power.

When we plugged in the USB mains charger there was some furious activity on the device with windows opening, messages popping up and seemingly random vibrations. We were not touching the screen and all of this was too quick to interact with (several "events" per second). In short, we just plugged it in and watched it go crazy!

Unplugging the USB mains charger stopped the problem. We could use the back button normally to get back to the desktop/home screen (closing all the windows that had opened) and the device appeared normal. Plugging it back in started the weirdness again. Unplugging stopped it again. We had to switch off the phone to charge it sensibly overnight.

The phone displayed no strange behaviour when trickle charging over the USB from the computer earlier in the day. This only affected charging from the mains power.

In the morning when we switched on the phone it was fully charged. I unplugged and plugged in the mains power to see if it would happen again but it did not. The battery icon showed the battery was full so I believe it didn't try to charge. Haven't tried mains charging again yet today but will do tonight.

Device is not rooted. It was fresh off the shelf yesterday. Very odd behaviour. Any ideas?

I have exactly the same problem if anybody knows the reason why! I only get this crazy, random behaviour when plugging in a charger which I bought from eBay and not the original HTC one. Could that be the reason?

thats weird mine did that just this morning, i left me HTC charger at my parents on the weekend so im using a crappy third party usb charger (one of those ones that comes with loads of different attachements) and a 3rd party usb cable to charge it. I went to stop my alarm this morning and it went crazy, scrolled randomly through loads of stuff and then started playing some random ringtone full blast which woke my gf! maybe a 3rd party charger does have an effect?
