So im guessing noone has exploited the Hudl yet and there probably isnt a factory image available?
I can see this being a deal breaker

Not really sure... have had a quick look for a root method and come across the following:

1. Download the ADB driver installer
2. Download Kingo root app
3. Run ADB
4. Connect Hudl to PC and allow ADB to update drivers
5. Run the Kingo app
6. Bingo! One rooted Hudl

It is worth noting that there are/have been some security worries over Kingo root
