Help First post.... Help!!!!!!!!

I just registered for this website. I'm hoping I can get some valuable information. I have the Samsung Captivate. Unfortunately it is much smarter than I am. Hey, maybe that's why it's called a smart phone. Anyway, my husband just bought me the Acer Iconia A500. We want to set up my Captivate to tether internet access on the Acer. My son swears by EasyTether but for some reason I can't find it on android market on my phone. Long story short, is it better to root (not even sure what that means) my phone instead of the tethering or are they the same thing and should I make an appointment with a psychiatrist now or later because I feel like my head is going to burst!!!!!!!!!

AT&T blocks tethering apps from the market - they want you to pay the $15 extra a month for their data plan that includes tethering.

That said, try putting your phone into airplane mode, then turn just your wireless connection on, and THEN search the market for the tethering app you're looking for. You should be able to find it at that point.

Just know that if you are NOT on a tethering plan and choose to root and do it anyways, AT&T will put a tethering plan on for you, or nullify your contract, their choice.

Must be different in the U.S. and if you are with AT&T. I am on Rogers in Canada and I also just got an ACER Iconia A500 Tablet and I was able to tether the data from my Captivate to it by using the built in utility. If I go to Settings - Wireless and Network, I have an option called Mobile AP. I turn that on and it turns my Captivate into a wireless hotspot. I then go to my wifi settings on the Acer and I connect to my phone wirelessly. Worked beautifully at my cottage this past weekend where there is no internet access, just cell.

I tether my Iconia through my Captivate (AT&T) all the time. Running a custom ROM that has Mobile AP already loaded.

At&t was doing that with iphones, but I haven't heard that they started doing this with androids yet. Have they?

Ran across this program today. You will have to root your phone to run it.

Use this program to sideload (install) the program.

Here's the program, I just tried it out. It works, just follow the setup help in the first post. I had to change the LAN to get mine to work also.
