Root First Rom Advice

Aslar

Newbie
My Captivate has been acting crazy of late and I am just out of warranty. AT&T suggested a master re-set, but since I can

Download rom manager from market, and use cyanogenmod7. It will tell you if its stable or not. That's what I use on my evo 4g. It is android 2.3. Make sure you back up whatever rom your on currently. (It will ask if you would like to do so) and I backed up apps using my backup. Make sure to look on YouTube and look for other articles on this site about flashing roms. Its a simple process when you know what to do.

I would recommend Mosaic VI, which is what I am using now. I've also heard good things about Serendipity 7. Just wondering, are you wanting to stay on 2.2 or move on up to 2.3?

I want to move to 2.3 I'm just worried about the stability of newer roms. Are there 2.3 roms out there that have most of the bugs worked out?

There are quite a few stable GB ROMs out there. And as far as bugs, there is a common GB charging bug, which oddly, I havent had much trouble with at all. Overall, I think the few minor bugs are outweighed by the advantages of GB. Check out the Captivate forums on XDA, you'll find plenty of ROMs there and lots of reviews and comments as well. Most of the threads will have instructions by the developers on how to install the ROM so it shouldnt be all that difficult.

i would stay away from cyanogen and miui for the time being atleast, i tried both of them within the last 2 weeks and neither were stable at all for me.

if youre not ready for 2.3.x then there are a bunch of good 2.2 roms, i really liked firefly, phoenix, and serendipity. the 2.3.x roms are stable, usually on my first charge after a flash it has a battery charging problem, but after that one time it doesnt happen again, and after your first phone call after a reboot you have to run a finger over the proximity sensor to get the screen to turn back on and after that it works fine until the next reboot. those are the only 2 real problems. but while im at it if you want a 2.3.x rom then i recommend symply sgs II, which is what im on now, or mosaic

Thanks for the advice everyone. Serendipity was on my list, but Mosaic wasn't. I'll check both of those out. Is Congnition any good for a newbe?
