Root First ROM Flash a BIG fail

I want to get rid of HTC sense, but I don't want to give up nice things like...the android market! :) I don't know what happened, but I installed cyanogenmod from ROM manager. I backed up all of my apps on titanium backup and flashed a backup using clockwork manager. I then flashed my new ROM with high hopes. Unfortunately, nothing worked after it was up. All of my apps were gone, ROM manager didn't even work, because it said it needed an update. The kicker was I couldn't install an update, because android market was not installed. It was a huge disappointment. I naturally freaked out, because I am a newbie and thought I trashed my phone. I downloaded the "vanilla" ROM from the Root sticky and was ready to start flashing away to hopefully at least recover my android market and be able to sync my 200+ military/civilian contacts that were locked in my Google account. I was then presented an option to restore using clockwork which I took. My phone is now back to its original rooted HTC Sense state again with all data. PHEW! Does anyone have any advice how I can get rid of sense without losing the market and my contacts? What is the perfect ROM? Thanks! - Ric

First off you need to get your terminology right. You use the word "flash" for every operation. Flashing is when you install a ROM, kernel or radio to non-volatile memory.

Sounds like you didn't flash gapps. ROM Manager may not tell you about that. I've never used it. Read the thread for the ROM you want to install. Condemned Soul had the most traffic last time I looked.

thanks bberryhill. Like I said, I am new at this. Does the condemned soul rom have the android market and compatibility to sync google contacts?

Most of the non-Sense ROMs put the Market and other Google apps in a separate file called gapps. You have to read the first post (OP) in the appropriate thread to know how to flash that ROM. If you really want to learn this lose ROM manager and install 4ext. Google it. Don't confuse 4ext with ext4.

What is the correct procedure to add Gapps? Do I flash the gasps ROM on top of the other ROM?
...You have to read the first post (OP) in the appropriate thread to know how to flash that ROM...

This would also apply to gapps if instructions are available there.

Otherwise I think you usually want to flash gapps right after flashing the ROM and before booting up.

That is where I would start at least.
